I just started to read Stein on Writing.

In the Preface, Stein writes "Women usually outnumber men among my students, readers, and friends, and I trust that they will forgive me for using a male pronoun to stand for both genders."

Well, I would have forgiven him had he not mentioned it, but since he did, I won't. I wonder if his choice is based on the stereotypical assumption that men are more likely to take offense rather than forgive. So, he's taking a flyer that, though his audience is mostly women, he can insult them.

For now, I'm going to keep reading to see if there is something worthwhile to learn. But this start was off-putting.

Has anyone read the book and found it useful, or not?
