How Important Is the Cover on a Romance Novel?

More important than you probably realize.

I was talking to another romance author one day and she said that she'd been reading some reviews, and one reader commented on something that stood out to her. This reviewer said that the couple on the cover didn't match the couple as described in the book, which took something away from the story for her.

I've been a reader of romance since I was a teenager; I've read hundreds of them. And when I heard this, I thought, "When I read romance novels, one thing I do is peek back at the cover from time to time." And I have to say, if the couple described within doesn't look like the couple on the cover, I'd be disappointed too.

So I guest the gist of it is, readers notice every little thing. They're invested in your love story. Be sure that the characters on the cover are accurately reflected in the pages of your book. It could mean the difference between snagging a reader of your books for life ... or not.

Happy writing!
