Here is what you might have missed around She Writes this past week.  I am a day late, image if you will, a writer with more deadline than hours in the day – yikes – and I am turning a year older this week. Not only am I growing older, my writing is getting bolder or perhaps just busier!!!  Have a terrific week!

Am I telling the truth? How to add power to your writing

Posted by Fiona Robyn on October 18, 2011 at 4:45am

Recently, I judiciously used the f-word in a blog post.

I was feeling frustrated with myself for not writing my truth. I was suffering. But, more importantly, my writing was suffering. It had become anaemic, half-hearted. It wasn't packing the punch it could.

In an article about writing poetry, Wendy Cope says:

"I find that the most important and helpful question to ask myself when I'm working on a poem is "Am I telling the truth?" T. S. Eliot said that the greatest difficulty for a poet is to distinguish between "what one really feels and what one would like to…Continue

She Writes Video Moment #4: At Land

When I first saw Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren, it was as if a window flew open in all the houses I ever inhabited. Yes, that kind of weather event.

Visually, Maya Deren broke open the rules on experimental narrative. The links between images create unexpected sentences of allusion and visual epiphany. So what does this mean for writers? A whole host of possibilities for poetics,…Continue

The 3 Most Common Hurdles on the Road to Getting Published

Get a free proposal review and free consultation when you register for THE EDITOR IS IN today.

It’s normal for writers to become discouraged at some point in their journey to getting published. For some it starts well before their manuscript is complete. For others the challenges don’t truly start until they start shopping their proposal and manuscript to agents or…Continue

Please share your publishing experience! Self-pub? Indie/Small Pub? Traditional? Print-on-Demand?

Many writers are curious about the different publishing routes, and want to hear actual stories and experiences.  PLEASE share with us!

  • If you self pubbed or did print-on-demand (POD), how much did it cost? What service did you use? (some listed below)
  • What about those of you who went with an indie or small publisher? What's your cut?
  • Strictly an E-publisher? What's your cut?
  • Who went the traditional route?  And your cut of the sales?
  • Did you…Continue

Book Trailers

I made a book trailer using my Mac software and it's netted me some great connections and leads through various contacts who've viewed it.  I was surprised by how easy it was to make and post the trailer.  While my sound is imperfect, this was the first time I'd done a voice over using Garage Band.

I'm contemplating other ways I can use multimedia on my web site, with my blog and to promote my current and future projects.  Do you have examples of multimedia that you've produced or…Continue

What does your author photo say about you? Two She Writers rock.

Since joining She Writes, I've been wondering why so many writers are spending hours and hours crafting their written words while spending such little time presenting themselves well visually. Go to the membership page and pick out 5 photos and random. How many writers would you like to get to know?  The reality is that it's a visual world and writers who want to create a great platform have to think about their author portrait and…Continue

NaNoWriMo

Just Say No to NaNoWriMo

Really?  Join the NaNoWriMo challenge to write a novel in a single month? Arrgghhh...! Why aren't the masses of our close SheWrites members screaming, Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!

Think of the writers you love. Did any of them regurgitate their work in thirty days, and if so, would you really want to read it? It takes lived experiences to come up with a single compelling idea that would appeal to the masses, and it takes even longer to revise them. Why would it take only 30 days to…Continue

Occupy NaNoWriMo

After checking in and reading the blog post "Just Say No to NaNoWriMo", currently residing in the Top Ten, I wanted to offer a counterpoint. I work full-time, and I write when I can steal a few minutes here and there - most often as I'm waiting at the dance school during my daughter's lessons. I am in writer's purgatory, not-yet-published, putting food on the table and doing my best to get things in order for THE CALL.

If you are going to be a writer you put your behind in the…Continue

You Can Take This Plot and Shove It!

I did something this morning that I’ve never done before.

Something that “experts” advise, “authors” practice, and that I’m hopeful will help me reach 50,000 words for NanoWriMo this year.

I’ve (finally) begun that Plot Outline that I talked about doing HERE.

Now, granted, I have NO idea if I’m doing it the ‘right’ way.  I just sat at the keyboard this…Continue

Breast Cancer

The Pink Invasion

It’s that time of year again.  The leaves are turning, the temperature is falling, and the over commercialization of the pink ribbon has started.
