The "Swamp Romp" a Cajun-Zydeco festival at the Fraze Pavilion was an exciting new musical experience. I love festivals. Outdoor events with lots of people, food and music to discover. Walking up to the venue I could hear the surrounding music, beckoning my presence and smell Cajun flavors mixed with nicotine from a few people smoking. The hot humid air was thick even though the sun was on the way down. Despite the heavy heat I was drawn in by the sounds, smells and made my way to food and drinks. The music was a style I would never initially be interested in. Yet once we found our seats in the pavilion, I found the sound intoxicating. The singer would address the enthusiastic crowd "Laisser les bons temps rouler" (Let the good times roll). People embraced the idea as they danced in front of the band. After a few songs I had to join them. Even led my boyfriend in twirling me around. Kicking my shoes off, like many of the other women. I know I'm not suppose to led but I couldn't stop spinning around and enjoying myself, feeling a breeze giving my sweaty skin a break from the heat. "Merci Beaucoup" (Thank you very much) the singer would acknowledge the cheers at the end of a song. The band would pull people from the area in front of them and welcome them on stage. One girl played the washboard while her friend captured the moment via her phone. Reminding the audience that we were a part of the bands family now. The good down home fun welcomed people of all ages dancing, cheering, and watching.

Taking part in different cultures is what makes this country diverse. It is how we grow as individuals expanding our cuisines and music lists. It is what makes us feel alive, fulfilled, and youthful. For this I am grateful for our jumbo stew of culture in this beautiful land we call America!
