Have you noticed all the books sans jackets in the stores? Instead publishers are stamping titles and accolades right on the cardboard. Apparently that's the new thing. Colin Beavan's memoir of living the ultimate green lifestyle is the perfect candidate for no jacket, since no jacket means one less piece of shiny paper to muck up the earth. Bet all the paper its printed on is recycled. Anyway, it works. Thanks, Viking.
Cult favorite Stephen Elliott's The Adderall Diaries just came out in naked hardcover by Graywolf. It has the look of Required Reading about it, and the title seems very familiar (Thanks, Jim Carroll). But doesn't this also look like a textbook?

I have never been a fan of book jackets. And my son seems to dislike them too. As a budding two year-old literary snob, he apparently can not stand to read "The Very Busy Spider" with its cumbersome book jacket on. He tosses it to the side with an effortless toddler toss. I have always adored the covers of vintage books; they are little surprises of design and style.
I like flare. It is a book's cover that catches my eye. Some are great others not so.Like my book cover "Sunday Awakening." Fern Lutkins The color is great and the girl has an air of mystery about her.
Definitely the beginning of a trend. Make a statement and save money at the same time. I wonder if the idea was an instant hit, or whether it took a long sell job to take it from concept to reality?
