Personally, I don't tend to like a book unless the protagonist is a strong female.  Perhaps the first book I read of this nature was Memoirs of a Geisha.  While the movie attempts to portray more of a love story, I found it to be a great book about a woman born into a difficult life and who fought to provide for herself in an unconventional way.  SHE is an extraordinary heroine.
