Tell them about something they have never even known existed.  The naturally produced hot water in Iceland, the young AFrican student of mine who spoke 11 languages because his father was a chief and had 11 wives, all of whom spoke a different language, about the difference between moon dust and earth dust, about Hannibal and his elephants traversing the Alps. I don't know how old your students are, but they can be asked to provide a focused reaction to this unexpected information either individually or in groups.

They do love talking, don't they!

I use group work with a lesson and let them do most of the talking.
