Agents and editors look for any reason to toss a manuscript into the rejection pile, so it is crucial to make a good impression in the first five pages. Mistakes include starting the story in the wrong place, or using an action scene that serves no purpose. We will do close readings of first chapters of published books to determine what makes them successful. We’ll also analyze the first five pages of students’ novels to see what works and what doesn’t. You will learn techniques that you’ll be able to apply throughout your novel. Wendy Nelson Tokunaga is the author of Midori by Moonlight and Love in Translation.
