Hi, everyone,
Just had to share this incredibly informative piece by Daniel Menaker, the long-time editor and writer, on how the book publishing business really works. It's equal parts sobering and uplifting (well, the end is somewhat uplifting) with some funny lines tossed off along the way.

This is an amazing article. I really respect Dan, who was a wonderful EIC at Random House-- he made us feel like no matter what happened, we were all in it together.

Oddly enough, this article made me feel a bit better about the business, I guess because I realize so many of the things I experience as an author are being experienced by everyone else, too.
But like he says, I'd still rather be doing this than anything else. What's the saying? "Do what you love and you'll never have to work another day in your life." I suppose that's why the state of the business scares all of us. We ARE doing what we love, and we're afraid it might go away.
