I have a new client who wants to publish a chapbook of poetry asap for an upcoming event and I'm trying to help him figure out how to publish it. Because of the short lead time I suggested self-publishing at first. Anyone know any self publishing outfits that specialize in this format or that would be good bets?
Thanks. Yeah, really a Kinko's might be more affordable and with desktop publishing as sophisticated as it is, I bet they could do it. He can always seek a conventional publisher down the line.
You were right in suggestion self-publishing. Most pubs won't touch poetry these days. There's not enough money in it for publishers so most poets self-publish anyway then they promote by doing readings, etc. It's a waste of time for most new poets to seek out pubs. Publishers would be interested in an established, famous poet or doing reprints of classic poetry, but most pubs today don't take poetry.
He could try Smashwords or something like that too if he just wants to do an ebook. It's completely free and if he wants it to appear on online bookstores he just has to provide Smashwords a cover. But he doesn't have to have a cover to go through them. But what I understand is if you don't provide a cover for your ebook, Smashwords doesn't distribute it to online stores for you. I am thinking of going through Smashwords for an ebook I am doing on writing tips, etc for aspiring writers. He might have more success if he goes with someone who gives him the option of ebook and print because he can get readers that like both forms.
