Hello Everyone!
I'm looking for fellow YA writers to form either a virtual or in-person writer's circle. I've recently completed my first novel, and am patiently revising and seeking input from every literary connection I have. I'm at the point where I could really use feedback from other serious writers, who won't just get swept up in the story, but will notice where I go off base with the tone, POV, plot, etc...
I live in South Orange, NJ - If you happen to be local, ping me! I may even be able to meet in NYC. Otherwise, if you're also at the place where you're ready for strong feedback and nitpicking, get in touch! I love reading, and am a quick revisionist and editor, so I am happy to reciprocate feedback.
If you aren't writing YA, we may still be able to help each other, I just figured I'd start in the genre I'm in!
My very best,
Melanie

KATIE CRANFORD, FRESHMAN
Slogging down the halls of high school is miserable enough as a lowly freshman, but try acting cool with crazy visions flashing before your eyes! When Katie Cranford falls into a string of psychic misadventures, she discovers that having the sight is no magic bullet to escape the hazards of freshman year.
Between her mother’s cringe-worthy comments and her best friend’s moods, Katie’s already in the weeds before the bell rings on the first day of school. Beneath Chester High’s fluorescent lights she feels about as special as a potato. When a bewildering vision lands Katie in the principal’s office, she has only her neighbor Brian to confide in as she scrambles for answers about her strange new talents. But the more she practices using the sight the more her life unravels, shattering friendships and drawing the ire of her nemesis Hilary Russell. Caught in a web of Hilary’s lies, Katie finds herself suspended and missing her first real date. With nothing left to lose, Katie resolves to unleash the sight and fight back with every fiber in her freakish being. After all, what good is being a psychic if you can't suck it up and face the future?
KATIE CRANFORD, FRESHMAN is complete at around 52,000 words. This is my first novel.

I just joined She Writes, recommended to me by many of my fellow writers here in Montclair. I had just started casually perusing all the offerings on the site when I came across your request for a writer's group.
First, I should say I really liked your novel synopsis. Cool idea. I think it also grabbed me because its tone is similar to that of my own YA, which I've been working on for a couple years. I was in a great writing group here in Montclair--one of our four members will be publishing her YA this spring, and is hard at work on the sequel. For a variety of reasons (mostly other commitments), we're not meeting anymore, and I miss it.
I have 200 pages on my novel, and an agent interested, though wanting the complete ms., which I'm struggling over a bit. Maybe we can meet or at least discuss things here. I'm a perfectionist, which really trips me up at this point in my writing (I find myself revising to the nth degree), and there's one part of my novel that's especially tripping me up..I need inspiration and some hand-holding!
If you want to hear a synopsis of my novel, or just to chat this way some more, let me know!

Congratulations on completing your first novel!! I really like topics with supernatural overtones, so I am biased already to like your synopsis.
I live in Bridgewater. I am still working on my first novel. While the main characters are young adults, I'm not sure how I would classify the thing overall. I have a beginning and middle, I just haven't sketched out the end.
During the week, I'm busy with my job and kids. But, I should be free most weekends if you'd like to chat.

Permalink Reply by Melanie Conklin on February 16, 2012 at 7:04am Great to hear from you! It took me a minute to remember that Bridgewater is in NJ - I hardly know anything about NJ outside of our little area! I certainly understand being busy and trying to scrabble out time to pursue your creative impulses. It sounds like you need some writing support - I'd be happy to read a chapter or synopsis for you and give you my opinion :)
Hi Melanie,
I'm sending my synopsis to your e-mail address.
