I made it! I validated 50,233 words in NaNo at 11:43 PM Pacific Standard Time on Wednesday, November 30. Seventeen minutes and 233 words to spare -- whew! I had to complete almost 4000 words on November 30, but all is well. Now I have to do other things, such as the curia agenda and minutes for the Legion of Mary. The meeting is at 7 PM on Thursday, December 1. Arrgh! :-P

Because I am juggling school and writing, I honestly didn't want to keep track of my word count.  I just stole moments, wrote for a few minutes here or there.  More piecemeal than I am accustomed to in writing and some of it isn't even quantifiable.  I did the Poetic Asides Poem-a-Day Challenge in a notebook.  But my nanowrimo was done on my computer and so I simply typed in one document and then copied and pasted whatever I had at day's end into the "merged" document.  I did not look at my word count at any point of the month after the first week.  Instead, I focused on doing my studies and writing what I could when I could.  So this morning I have opened the document and have not yet looked at the total.  Bear in mind, this does not include the jottings of poem fragments and metaphors, etc., that are in my notebook.

 

Okay.  Here goes . . . let's see what my final word count is.  *sucking in and holding my breath*

 

54,161

 

*whoosh of surprised release of breath*

 

Picture me boggling right now because I honestly didn't expect to see anything close to 50k words.  Like I said, I stopped keeping track and just wrote in snippets and fragments. I  don't even think I could try to piece them all together.  Today is my last day of class. I  have all of the rest of this new month to figure out what I can use of do with all these words.  

 

I think I just amazed myself.

 

And to one and all who participated, congratulations!  I have always believed that making a commitment to writing is the accomplishment.  Whether you said you would write 50k and did or did not reach that number, the fact that you did something for yourself, for your craft, and for your writing . . . to me, that is the victory.

I reached 86 hours of productive revision on my book, so I'm thrilled.  I also learned a lot about how much commitment it takes to make real progress.  I plan to continue to work at close to this level and see where it leads me.  Next goal: getting the novel ready in time to submit to the Faulkner.  It got shortlisted as a novel-in-progress for the 2011 Faulkner, and I'd love to submit it again when it's complete.
