Have you noticed that you purposely wear unmatched clothes if you're going to be home all day writing? Do you care? Today I happen to love my striped orange pants and two shirts--one blue, one green. Might not even change when I go to check the mail! My neighbors already think I'm weird.

While I do dress every day to go to work in my home office, I can tell you for certain that I always should change again before I leave the house. Sometimes I forget; frequently I get caught at the mailbox in my writing clothes. I think the outfits simply add to mystique that surrounds writers. I think they do. I could be wrong. Ha.
This is great! I creep out to my mailbox hoping I won't see my neighbors when I'm wearing "writing clothes." I think they know I'm a little eccentric. The most important thing is comfort!
When I'm going out I try to make myself presentable. Nothing like showing up at preschool in sweats with hair in a scrunchie because I woke up at 4am with an idea that I just had to get on paper...and running out of time to get dressed in proper attire for dropping off a 5 year old!

But I will admit...there are times my clothing is slightly altered in line with characters I'm writing. I try to keep it toned down so my family and friends wont notice, but if I'm writing about a professional woman I may make sure I've fixed my hair and makeup and might even dig out a pair of heels. If the character is a hermit in the back woods I'd probably dig to the back of the closet for an old worn out flannel shirt. Maybe it's kindof cookey...but there's a degree of getting into the head of the character. But if asked, I'd probably never admit it to my family and friends... *chuckle*
Love it! I hadn't thought about it before but I probably dress like my characters too! No wonder I went out in a beret last week. I miss my Parisian female trapped in cyberspace because I'm book marketing now. no time for writing! isn't writing like acting where you inhabit the characters you write about? Especially to hear dialogue.
Having a chance to really see the characters come to life, and to know them inside and out is the only way to go. Though I do have to be careful that my discussions in my head with the characters try to eek themselves out. Some days I realize I'm actually carrying out the conversation out loud -- with me saying both sides of the discussion. And I also find it difficult to hold back comments my characters might say in actual conversations with real people.

Not everyone is fully understanding when you start acting like you have split personalities. :) But for me, that's my clue that the character is really ready to jump onto the page...when I almost literally can't keep them from talking.

Ah...a new disorder? Character Bleed -- when the character leaks out into your real life. Becoming part of your wardrobe and discussions.
Love this! Character bleed? Yes! That's what happens to actors on the set of a movie when they've inhabited their roles. They can't break out of it so they hide in their trailer. We don't have the luxury so we appear alien-like in public! I haven't bled into food shopping in a beret with a snippy French accent yet but who knows what might happen tomorrow?!
Lol. What I wear out I tend to wear at home no matter if I'm going out or not. If I plan to leave my comfort zone (i.e go further than the corner shop) I will brush my hair at least. My thing is socks, though, I do try and match my socks if I'm going out. Which is odd, because no one is going to see, but it has become a sign of my mental stability almost. Things are good if I'm wearing a matching pair of socks.

One thing I do do if I'm going to be spending the day at home, writing or otherwise, is put some footwear on. Even if it's just for an hour, I'll wear my trainers, because it makes me feel like I've actually gotten up and done something today. I hate the feeling that all I've done is get up, so wearing something on my feet (not slippers) helps remove that feeling somewhat.
We are kindred spirits! I'm into my socks too! Maybe it's a writer's thing! I have funny ones. My favorite ones are peach colored with red fake nails painted on them but I only take them out for special occasions b/c I don't want to use them up. I can never replace them!
I wore them yesterday b/c I finished the editing of my 1st novel from 10 years ago that is scheduled for re-release. An auspicious occasion!
Yea for eccentrics!
Very cool and congrats. I have a lot of socks, mostly because it means I don't have to go to the laundrette too often. The brighter the better I say!
I did want to add that I have fingerless gloves for writing, because for some reason, even in the summer, I get cold hands when I'm at the computer. I have some fluorescent pink ones and my mother friends gave me some posh padded ones too.
Ooooh! You are really there! I live in AZ where it reaches 115 degrees in the shade so gloves aren't a possibility. (Im afraid to ask if there ate underwear writers out there.) But I can get a clear pix of the pink fingerless fluorescent. That could be very inspiring!
It took me a little while to figure out what AZ was then. I live in Wales, and it does get really nice here, it's just my hands I think, lol.
