Comment by Mickie Sherwood on July 8, 2012 at 5:45pm Hi, all,
The opening day for the Essence Music Festival 2012 in New Orleans was Fiday. And—I was there. A diverse crowd enjoyed the daytime activities and, I expect, also looked forward to the evening performances.
New Orleans was one rocking city this weekend.
Get a glimpse of what I saw at Mickie's Mutterings. Enjoy the pictures.
What did you like best when you attended?
Comment by Mickie Sherwood on June 25, 2012 at 3:10pm You're welcome, Vivienne.
Comment by Mercedes Keyes on June 25, 2012 at 5:58am Yep Vivienne, before actually taking on writing, I hadn't a clue of what it all entailed. It basically boils down to what you're writing for. I write because my mind is filled with stories I'm dying to tell - some I have had to strike off the list because there is no time to get them all done. I love it - it's who I am. But - by no means have I made a living off of it yet. I know some who wish to write to make a living, SMH - if that's what motivates you - you're in big trouble... *smile* Oh well... best get back to it.
Mickie, thanks for the clarification.
Mercedes, I have written four books and had to read and revise three of them after publication.
Comment by Mercedes Keyes on June 25, 2012 at 4:50am Hmmm, Kimberly - because I don't know your story - there is little help that can be offered - but - know this. Webster Fields was re-read - rewritten, altered - adjusted no less than 50 times! I kid you not. I do believe, it was more than that. It started off as going to be ONE book. Gold Raven - about their daughter.
However, the story grew and I fell in love with her mother, Lena. It then became two books. Because Mike was sold in book one, and other things happened... so - I couldn't just "END IT" - Webster Fields grew into a trilogy.
Each book was read numerous times, over and over and over - altered, adjusted - bits added, some taken away. Then, things happened, I put it away. Years later, I met hubby two, pulled it back out and he and I re-read it with fresh eyes - three more times! Each book! Book One 471 pages, brought down from over 500 - Book two 499pages, brought down from almost 600 - book three, the finale - 511, brought down from 550 - and then after they were published, each of them were altered slightly AGAIN - which required more reading.
Now... years later after their being published... I am going to transfer them over to Amazon and read thru ONE MORE TIME. Yes... OVER 50 times, easy. I wouldn't be shocked if in truth it had been read by me close to 100. And yet, it is still not exactly as I wish it to be... but hubby has demanded that I leave it alone.
LOL - but the one more time is still coming... all my other novels - have not been read less than 15 times. Even my drama series that I was turning out bi-weekly, and could not give the attention I did to my other works - I read over and adjusted before I put them to volumes... and yet I still see - things I wish I'd caught.
That's me...
Comment by Kimberly Lane on June 25, 2012 at 12:12am I've only written one book. Each time I read it I like but I've had to revise it countless times because of typos and grammatical mistakes. The problem I'm having is with my ending. I intended for the book to be the first in a series so it stops when all of the family secrets come to a boil. My readers are a little pissed about this but I don't feel like I should change it. Any suggestions?
Comment by Mickie Sherwood on June 24, 2012 at 4:43pm Hi, Vivienne,
Now you've stumped me. Check here for the guidelines. If the endings are HEA or HFN and fit the guidelines, I've got a place for it.
Let me know.
Mickie
Comment by Mercedes Keyes on June 24, 2012 at 3:46pm Thanks Teicha - no doubt you've just begun. I'm still going to let others weigh in before I confess how many for Webster Fields. Which was certainly the one that was hammered away on the most from my others.
Comment by Teicha Hill Mailhes on June 24, 2012 at 1:33pm Hi Mercedes, I don't have a full length novel yet. But for my last novella, I went through three grueling rewrites - agonizing over everything from punctuation to dialogue tags. Finally I had to let it go and send in for submission.
