From the One-Minute-Writer fiction prompt "toaster:"
Black smoke rose from the ancient toaster, filling the tiny motel room with the pungent odor of charred bread. Sparks flew from the exposed outlet as she ripped the plug from its grasp, sending a roach scurrying across the counter out of their fiery path.
“Mommy, I’m hungry.”
She turned to see her young son standing barefoot behind her, and tried not to cry.

I lift my first cup of coffee to my lips and let its warm, rich taste glide past my lips, across my tongue, and enter my body to fire me up for a new day. My mind buzzes with activity, trying to sort out priorities. But for this one moment, my fingers dance across the keyboard, lightly tapping out this tiny bit of writing before the short time for such indulgence slips away.
