What is EPublishing?

EPublishing (also e-publishing) is Electronic publishing, or the digital publication of electronic magazines, articles and e-books. The formats for epublishing are quite extensive- if you're interested in learning more, Wikipedia has an excellent breakdown of them here:

We just found another device Amazon uses to help authors promote internally. What they are doing is approaching the power of being distributed by a traditional publisher. This is huge! We are on Twitter using the hashtag #kindlechat if anyone wants to come over.

Wendy,

I think you're right on by keeping your work available on every possible device. As I get my Amazon universe operating smoothly, and my marketing elements mapped out, I'll start adding platforms. Keeping in mind that Amazon requires my attention on the pricing, they require lowest price to be on Amazon. That's not a big issue, just important to the overall marketing process.

Kindlechat on Twitter today! Would like to announce any new books there as well.

Hi all, and hello Wendy,

I appreciate your comment about getting on Smashwords and Amazon. I've put my work in a few places over the past few years as the digital publishing tools evolved rapidly. Most recently, some statistics are starting to show up regarding Kindle in particular. Here's my take as a constant researcher and a follower of self publishing for the past 30 years: AMAZON IS CHANGING THE GAME.

Okay, no more capital letters. But while Smashwords is an important platform and there's no reason to ignore it, Amazon amounts to a distributor. Their attention-getting devices are time-proven, and they are making some brilliant moves which directly benefit writers. I am now focusing solely on Amazon and pulling all of my work into Kindle. It's terribly exciting!

By the way, you do NOT need an ISBN to publish new work on Kindle. Amazon has its own system for numbering the products. The Amazon (now called Kindle Desktop Publishing) process is so streamlined now. I have an instructional book up on Kindle called The 4-Hour Publisher. You can find it searching Suzanna Stinnett on Amazon. And a secret note for SheWrites: I'm pricing each of my Kindle guides at 99 cents for Valentine's Day. So wait a few days if you want any of my offerings there. You can read more about how well authors are now doing on Kindle over at my blog, New World For Writers (blogspot.com). And join us on Twitter, Fridays 12-1 pm PST, for #Kindlechat!

Wonderful information here, thanks everyone. See you soon.

Looking for someone to "test-drive" an epub book and maybe tell me how to get rid of some big white spaces that I . . . can't get rid of. Like, gaps in the flow of text. Thanks to all . . .

For publishing services, visit http://dehanna.com/database.htm and download the database for a terrific list of sources in a comparative chart.

For e-book publishers, visit http://www.hipiers.com/publishing.html for a comprehensive list with comments.

Carolyn: Thanks for your detailed response. Now my question is: does anyone have any experiences with eBook publishers (my novel doesn't suit Zetta's list) .and or eBook publishing services, where I can have my book formatted and then submit it myself? Thanks

You need an ISBN for every distinct edition of a work. My e-book, for instance, has its own ISBN (Canadian); when I publish the print version next year (U.S.), it will require its own. This is because of both the format change and the country change. As well, audiobooks, foreign versions of a book, etc., all get ISBNs. The same, original book also gets a new ISBN if there are editorial changes (i.e., more than fixing a few typos) in content in a second printing, which make it a second edition that is different from the first.

E-publishing is not as simple as it appears, though if a publisher does the work for you, it's indeed quicker and often simpler than print publishing. If you self-publish your e-book, then you need to learn how to convert the core manuscript into multiple formats for the plethora of reading devices now out there. Or hire somebody to do it for you.

E-books require the same level of editing, proofreading, and layout/design that p-books require in order to be accepted as peers to p-books. Cutting corners in these aspects makes a lower-quality product and contributes to e-books' reputation as inferior to p-books.

In the end, electronic publishing vs. print publishing, self-publishing vs. POD vs. traditional publishing, are all just different channels for putting one's work to the public. The easiest route for an author to take is to hire an author-services company (incorrectly called "self-publishers") to produce the book. The author may have a lot of control, but the author still pays for the whole job, making it vanity publishing, because there is no editorial control. The author-services house may employ people to copy edit and proofread the book, but because of low pay in this market, the experience level of these people is lower, on average, than in conventional houses or among professional freelancers.

The only way to claim all revenue from a book, e- or otherwise, is to do it all yourself (self-publish). The other options involve other parties who take a piece of the pie for their services, prior to any royalties you might receive.

As for covers, whether you can use your print cover on an e-book depends on who owns the rights.

Congratulations, Zetta, on your terrific interview, and to you, Pauline, for the link to the Atlantic article about google's entrance into e-publishing.
I'm starting my research into publishing INTO THE WILDERNESS electronically. My current questions include: do I need an ISBN for an electronic edition? Can I use the cover art of the printed version in the e-version? I haven't gotten to the specifics of formatting yet. I've just watched the video on amazon - which makes e-publishing look very easy. But then there are a million discussions and threads about snafus I don't pretend to understand - especially the technical stuff. And I want to be sure that the book is available not just on Kindle, but on all the e-formats. Anyone with any experience and/or advice, please help me out! Thanks.
