How does one put together an anthology? I don't know anything about rights, or post publishing payments. I have a monthly personal essay show, so I know I could get enough material together. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Christine - I don't know much about anthologies, but here is my experience: I have a non-fiction essay coming out soon in a themed anthology edited by a known writer. She put out a "call for submissions" on the topic and received numerous quality essays, ten of which she chose for the anthology. Her publisher "bought" the idea after she presented the book proposal and several sample essays. I have a 'collection' of short stories that I have been querying agents about. This is different than an anthology because it is a collection of my own work. Most agents want book proposals on creative non-fiction and samples of your writing for such a collection. There are dozens of agents out there who accept proposals for this type of work. Perhaps you could choose your best essay as a starting point, then do a call for submissions around a theme after querying an agent and sending a proposal. Does this help?
Hi Emma- This helps a lot. I've been querying agents for my YA Novel and I never thought to do it for an anthology!
Glad this discussion is starting, I'm going to watch it closely.
