What are some places that publish narrative non-fiction essays? Obviously, travel essays have a niche - in some magazines and anthologies - but what about other topics? Where have you published your work?

I had an essay published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Stories of Divorce and Recovery. (So NOT what I had in mind when I was a little girl dreaming of being a published author!) You can check out their story call-outs here: http://www.chickensoup.com/form.asp?cid=possible_books I also had an essay included in a Patchwork Path anthology. http://www.patchworkpath.com/index.php/story-calls My writers' group here in Las Vegas (http://hendersonwritersgroup.com) publishes an anthology every other year; I've had two pieces published in that.
Hi All! I've not yet had the pleasure of having an essay in an anthology, though I appreciate the tip about checking Seal Press -- they do such great work. But I have had personal/reported essays on health and sex in More, Family Circle and Marie Claire magazines. A few years back I wrote about my dysfunctional relationship with my Alpha Romeo for aFebruary (Valentine's) issue of the now defunct Las Vegas Life (Hello, Linda! Sure wish I'd known about the Henderson writers group when I was living in Vegas!)
Norine Dworkin-McDaniel
Mothering magazines like Mothering and Brain, Child publish essays.
Ooo--Also in-flight magazines often have a back-pager that's a personal essay relevant in some way to a city that they serve. I tend to have personal epiphanies while traveling (hey, get them where you can), and so in-flight magazines make sense for me.
Quick questions, Please. How long did it take to hear back from Chicken Soup For The Soul after you sent in your article?

Hi Lori. I'm not sure if you received an answer to this question, so I am going to stick my nose in someone else's conversation. Twice, for two different books, Chicken Soup e-mailed me a contract two weeks after their deadline. I signed both contracts and one story made their book, the other one did not.
I've published essays in Lilith, Arts and Letters, Newsweek (My Turn Column), Body & Soul (until it was bought by Martha Stewart and stopped publishing essays), anthologies (check Poets & Writers classifieds, also AWP Writer's Chronicle, Seal Press, etc.). Though I haven't published there, Creative Nonfiction, Fourth Genre, and Bellevue Literary Review are prime venues for personal essays.
I've published in newspapers, magazines, on the web and in anthologies like Travelers' Tales The Thong Also Rises, The Subway Chronicles and Chicken Soup for the Soul: All in the Family where my essay "Thanksgiving with MaryJane" -- about a cosmic 1979 meal that gifted my Berkeley family with a sudden ability to perceive each other as the loveable characters we truly are -- appears this month. Plus, I edited and published a collection of essays by foreign women in modern Turkey in Tales from the Expat Harem. Travelers' Tales seems to always be collecting for various anthologies. Poets & Writers often lists calls for submissions. Anthologies Online.
I laughed out loud at your Thanksgiving story! Our holiday was wild if someone cooked marshmellows on top of the yams. My story, "Easter is Over!", is in the All in the Family book, too. I'm going to go check out the other two anthologies you listed. Thanks!
Thanks for the mention! Anthologies have been good to me as a way to enter the world of a published author. My first book--all mine, not an anthology will be out in May.

I'm still running calls for manuscripts the first week of every month at www.anthologiesonline.com
