What are some places that publish narrative non-fiction essays? Obviously, travel essays have a niche - in some magazines and anthologies - but what about other topics? Where have you published your work?

Oops, it should read as October 2009, not October 2008! Apologies.
Here's a link of markets for essays that I received today. I thought it would be helpful.

Tami, thanks for this link. It looks really helpful.
This is a great list. Thank you!
Wow - there are so many responses, I feel overwhelmed! This is great - and I hope this thread is helpful for other writers as well. Thanks to all of you for all the great leads! Keep 'em coming!
FYI Everyone- Dawn Raffel just left More Magazine- I just got the email-
Does anyone know who has replaced her?
Op-ed sections of newspapers are a good place to submit relevant essays.
Hi there. My main publishing genre is memoir, specifically the personal essay. To date, I've published in The New York Times Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, NPR's All Things Considered, Northeast Public Radio, American Health, Prevention, Newsday, the Cup of Comfort series, and The New York Daily News, among others. These days I also publish regularly on my blog, here.
This is really a great thread. So many resources to sort through! I have a piece in the new anthology "Gravity Pulls You In: Perspectives on Parenting Children on the Aut..." In the past, I've submitted to some of the national publications mentioned here by others, but never got more out of it than a stack of rejection emails. I've also had a few short pieces posted on parenting websites.

Curious too about HuffPo. How does one get "invited" to post? (If someone already answered this, sorry. I couldn't locate the response.)

I'd like to try some of the online journals, like Literary Mama, though very often those placements don't pay anything. And I'm also going to check out some of the links listed here— I'd love to find my way into another anthology. I also post essays on my blog.
My essays on loss, grief and recovery have been published in printed newsletters such as PAILS of Hope and Online with f.i. SHARE. From 2000-'03 Ouders Online, a Dutch parental magazine published my series of essays "Eens een moeder altijd een moeder" (Once a Mother Always a Mother) on loss, grief and recovery.
This is a good time to mention that InterfaithFamily published Gremchelich and Easter Eggs and musings on heritage What Am I If Not Jewish? InterfaithFamily commissioned me to write about death rituals and my mother's wishes regarding her last rites, which wasn't published since I received the wrong deadline for the theme issue. The editor suggested she'd interview me by phone on the subject, so I'd get the word out anyway. At first I was reluctant, I wasn't going to get paid for the interview, whereas I would have been for my essay, but I decided to go for it.
Instead of reading my essay, you can listen to the mp3 of Ronny Friedland talking with me about A White Shroud.
Anastasia already mentioned Poets & Writers as a good source for finding essay markets, I'd like to add Writer's Digest, and the Market Focus in the April 2010 issue of The Writer happens to be the personal essay.
Where can i publish/submit essays on mental wellness/mental illness? Anyone, please? Thanks!
