Hey Beth,
Loved your clean and mean piece on Seventh Generation.com. You have a lovely style! Keep up it coming.

Sue, I am so with you on the PW bias. I wrote my book, The Alchemy of Loss, which in Canada, was a National bestseller and made the top 100 books of 2008. Here is what PW had to say:
"Resilient in the end, Carter shares all her doubts and fears along the way, which other grieving widows may appreciate." Doesn't get much more condescending and seems to reflect your point about their terrible view of women's memoirs.
Not sure what its going to take to change the strange world of US publishing...

I just posted a blog here on shewrites.com in response to that Publishers Weekly's "Best Books of 2009" list that focuses on PW's treatment of women's memoirs. It's called "Angry or Honored to be Ignored by Publishers Weekly?" It's under "blogs," or at http://tinyurl.com/yawz7oo if you'd like to see it. Thanks!

Hi, all: I'm just getting into essay writing after editing at once-great newspapers and magazines, including Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide, as well at the NY Daily News and Crain's NY Business. In the three years since TV Guide rewarded me for a decade of loyal service by laying me off, I've become another Brooklyn-based writer/mom trying to figure out this brave new world, finding my voice blogging as "bethina" for seventhgeneration.com. I hope you'll check out my latest post, which is getting a big response. I love it when I stir things up! Best, Beth

"Have you used watercolor pencils?  They're really great for traveling, and you can use a water brush, one that has a built in water well, to smooth out the colors."
