Any favorite books with Farm, Ranch, Rural setting?

Started by Shanyn Silinski. Last reply by Shanyn Silinski Mar 4, 2011. 2 Replies

Thanks for asking this question Patricia... I'd have to say that some of John Sandford's books really cover their rural area well, as do Stephen Hunter's books with the Swagger family.  Louis l'Amour…Continue

I just blogged about my favorite topic -- animals -- and, specifically, The Cow Sanctuary.  I invite you all to check it out.  http://brenmcclain.com/2011/02/introducing-you-to-the-cow-sanctuary/

Deborah, I didn't participate in 4-H.  Went to one meeting and they threw all the sewing/cooking stuff at me -- and I didn't go back!

The only 4H I was offered was the Home - Ec. units.  Great for socializing but I still can't sew. My kids wouldn't take 4H. They wanted to play sports instead. Do you have Junior Farmers? I was heavily involved with it until I graduated (got too old).

Cool, Deborah.  Since I didn't do it myself, I'm doing a lot of research, reading about it, talking to folks and going to county fairs in Kentucky.  My father had the Grand Champion in 1941 in Anderson, SC.  You have anything to share?????

I was in 4-H as a girl, and our children are in it. Showed steers, pigs, bucket calves, goats, and horses. Lots of fun.

Hi Shanyn!  I bet that was fun.  We had cows, beef cattle -- Herefords -- but I didn't show.

Brenda! We did 4-H but it was showing horses, a lot of fun though.

Hello Good Folks!  So wonderful to meet up with you all here and read about what you're writing/doing.  As for me, I'm writing a novel about a time-honored rural experience, 4-H boys and girls feeding out steers for the big show and sale.  Beyond it all, it's a story about maternal love.  I grew up on a farm in SC.  http://www.brenmcclain.com
