Handwriting VS Typing

Does anyone else struggle with how they get words onto a page...whether digital or paper? I know I struggle with digital writing. Looking to explore the difference between the page and screen, and figure out ways to work well.

Hello all, just thought I would say another welcome. I have not been here enough, but I am going to try more.  I have been in a reading vs writing phase.  I went to try to write a poem on my computer this evening, and somehow it will not work.  I grabbed a piece of scrap paper and it flowed right out.  Any thoughts on this phenomena?  Do you experience the same, or opposite?  I would love to know.  I am working to develop a better writing practice, and I think the method of writing is key to my growth.  Thanks for being here.

I always find myself struggling between pen and paper and the computer screen. Only recently have I tried pounding the keyboards sans pen and paper. Yet with my journals, I definitely need to go the pen and paper route. I grew up in a generation that crossed over from the typewriter to the computer. Part of the learning of that generation was simply to write down everything first on paper. Besides, it is such a delight to write on pen and paper. I've been called a romantic as well as old school but nothing beats the magic that comes with writing using pen and paper.

LIke so many of us, as I have read, I hate sitting for hours at a light screen straining my eyes to write my next greatest plot. Because often times more than not, I look focus so fast because I'm more involved with looking away from the monitor just to relax my eyes. But when I got back to my writing...well that next greatest plot...gone. I have grown up in the 1980's, many people back then were not able to have a computer at home. We either used a typewriter or the good ol' fashioned pen and paper, which is on of my personal favorites to date. I use my computer for other things like composing music, but for writing I love------PEN AND PAPER! I will never give that up for anyone.

Here are a few reasons why I go pen and paper: One, travels better with no worries about battery drainage. I can write for an hour, two hours, three, eighteen, twenty-four or more and never have to worry about a power source. As long as I have a sharpener or several packs of pens, which I usually do, on hand I will write until I sprain my wrists. Then feel pretty go after knowing I did writing with no worrying in between about power source.

Two, where is your writing when or if your computer crashes? Lost some really good writing on my mom's computer when it crashed due to an unseen virus. Gone, gone, gone, gone. With pen and paper, as long as you keep your notebooks top condition or pretty close to it, more of that later-LOL, in a place for all your writing, you will always have your writing to look back on, especially when you cannot get your computer to start. Grab your notebooks and dive right in to the next chapter.

Three, paper is easier to look at! I don't now about anyone else, but staring at a lit source for a long time really strains the eyes. Our eyes are made to receive light to see an object that it reflects from, but with the computer screen, it is a light source and is not reflecting anything. I like paper, I can see better to write.

Four, this will be the last one, even though I know there are loads more reasons I can give-LOL, I can keep more better records of my work without having to start up my computer.

Well that is it for me for now, smile lots everyone. :)

My ideas come out better on paper. I hate sitting in front of a screen typing for long periods of time. I like the smell of paper and the way my words look. I also like crossing things out, writing in different ink colors... aaahhh the joys of paper...

I like this group!!

No Brainer: Handwriting Trains the Brain By Creating Multiple Memory Paths
Tuesday's Wall Street "Personal" Journal (October 5, 2010 page D1) headline article ("How Handwriting Trains the Brain" by Gwendolyn Bounds) relates that writing by hand engages the brain in learning. What she does not address is how.

I struggle between keyborading and handwriting. Maybe it's a generational thing. Anyway, I recently wrote two blog entries on handwriting. I would love your comments!

Welcome Franki and Kathryn....I will be posting a good discussion here soon....in the middle of getting a submission out. If you have any ideas you would like to start, please feel free, and please invite anyone you know who might be interested. I am in the middle of writing my submission and struggling to type it and edit it. Ah the physical vs the digital.
