I just joined Innovative Publicity to see what you're all about. My book is finished and edited, and I've been in the query stage since Nov.  I've been posting with SheWrites since April, plus reading oodles on marketing and publicizing.  If I'm not picked up, I plan to self-publish.  Either way, I need to know how to Publicize.

I'm trying to publicize the piece I wrote for Guide to Literary Agents.  A few people have suggested I try to get blogs to link to it.  Does anyone have a blog, or know of a blog, that might be interested in linking to this?  Thanks!

I'm being featured on the blog Guide to Literary Agents and I'm doing what I can to publicize it.  I'm hoping it can be a good form of publicity.

Author friend Andrew E. Kaufman created his own book trailer at OneTrueMedia.com. It's an amazing trailer and he said the hardest thing was finding the pics/videos. The creating is free...they have some stock pics or you can go to places like Dreamstime.com or others. Dreamstime is very reasonable and even has a free section. Watch the trailer, though. You'll see what we as authors are capable of... Trailer for While The Savage Sleeps

Hello! I'm a writer interested in going further with her career, so publicity is always a good thing. I've been doing quite a bit of freelance, but I'm interested in publishing my YA novel. If anyone is curious, this is my website (I'm hoping it in and of itself is a good tool for publicity):

Oh, and the question of who I am reaching out to is I assume regarding the audience. My audience is progressive women. The book should appeal to all ages of progressive women, but I anticipate particular interest from three groups: young women looking for mentoring and leadership advice, women at mid-career facing some tough issues and looking for how to navigate the power grids of work , political, and personal life, and older feminists who want to continue the work and the legacy.

I expect I have said enough controversial things that the right will do their usual attack jobs. That should help get people's attention. And I usually get a secondary audience of progressive men or even fairly conservative men with daughters they adore.

Wow, what great and generous advice, Stacey! Thanks so much. I will check out Gina's interview with Charlie Rose and make sure to find out what that whole paragraph about heat maps means in practical terms.

This really feels to me like the fun part of the book and I am very excited to be at the place where I can start to focus on marketing. I am sure I will have more questions and am happy to play the process out in public if that would be helpful to others.

Hi Gloria, I have some thoughts which I imagine are shared by you and others. I responded to your initial comment very generally with the hope that it would start some discussion. What first comes to mind after reading your response is exactly that: who are you reaching out to?

Your website is always a reflection of who you are - and yours of course reflects a very busy, accomplished pro! If I were you I'd stick with Heartfeldt, because as you say it's known- and work the forthcoming book through it. I'd also merge the other blogs as they're not so dissimilar in topic and you don't want to appear lagging in new content, and we're in agreement on what your landing page will become.

Using Ning could be terrific for one aspect of your social media, and Facebook another. Did you catch Gina Bianchini on Charlie Rose not too long ago? She makes the distinction between the two vehicles concisely and superbly. (It's avail on his site; see below for general ideas on gifting/bonuses on one, discussion on the other, for example.)

Not knowing more about the book itself, here are some other ideas gathered around Itown:

1. Organize your thoughts around all of your possible sales channels - online spots such as Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc., or offline channels such as corporate gifts, independent bookstores, gift stores, etc.
2. Make sure that you have a killer sales page for your book online. Ever heard of heat maps or eye tracking? We read web pages in a specific way and that makes a difference between a sale and no sale sometimes.
3. Add a media page to your website. If someone visits your site and sees a list of publications that have mentioned you and your book in their columns, or talk show hosts who have interviewed you on their shows – it speaks volumes about how *someone* you are and the value of the message in your books.

Hope that helps fuel the vehicle!

Thanks for the response, Stacey-Yes I blog and Twitter. But not enough. I am trying to build my Twitter and Facebook network with an eye to who might actually buy and/or buzz the book rather than sheer numbers. That's not exactly a science, and I have not yet made an effort to reach out in a systematic way--so far, it's pretty much been accepting or rejecting those who have made friend/follower requests to me. Any tips on how to target outreach to new friends and followers?

Indeed, I need to redo my website so that my blog is the homepage, and I need to consolidate the current three blogs into one blog with three major topics for starters. The big question is how to juggle the blog Heartfeldt for which I am already known with the book's blog-i.e.,to make them separate or all-in-one with the book taking over the whole site for the next year. Also I want to have a social media capability for the book so readers can interact with one another. Probably I'll be using Ning for that. So a key strategic question is whether to position any one book as the centerpiece of a personal website versus maintaining a book site separate from but connected to the personal website. Of course all things are possible with enough money, but like most authors, I need to focus on leveraging a small investment to best advantage.
