Hi, all!
I'm not *quite* a librarian writer, but hope to be soon(ish). At this point, I'm researching grad schools and starting my multitude of lists (qualifications, requirements, applications, pro/con, etc). I've been asking anyone and everyone for help, and then I thought - of course! SheWrites is such a great community as-is, why not seek out some librarians here?
Any information you all can give me would be excellent! I have a few programs in mind, but there are some topics carrying more weight:
- online programs vs. in person, and similarly full-time vs. part-time
- school librarian vs. young adult librarian (specifically, if school librarians can get jobs in public librarians as well, or are they pigeon-holed. I want a focus, of course, but I don't want to focus too much and cut myself out of a field)
I'd love to hear about your personal experiences with your MLIS - workload, pressures, rewards, financial woes, projects/theses, etc!
I know this is a lot to ask, but like I said, I'm kind of feeling things out at this point so anything is helpful!
Thanks gals!

Permalink Reply by Erika Earp on March 9, 2011 at 2:48pm Hi Allison! I went to school in Illinois, just outside of Chicago--Dominican University. They don't really have an online program. I think they had maybe 1 or 2 classes that were online. As for part time/full time, as long as you finished all of your classes within (I think) 10 semesters, they didn't care which you were. Full time was only 3 classes per semester, though. I really enjoyed the program and most of the instructors. The 2 main reasons I chose that school were 1) it was close enough to my parents that I could drive home in 6 hours and 2) no thesis required.
As for having the MLIS, every job is different (duh). I have a coworker, who started this group, who has a much heavier workload than I do. (Sorry, Megan, it's true, and I'd totally take some of it if we were in the same branch.) I don't really know much about the school librarian v ya librarian issue, because I'm adult reference. I hope my little bit of info helped a little.

Permalink Reply by Genna Sarnak on March 23, 2011 at 7:33pm Hi! I'm about to embark on the same journey as you are! In two weeks I'm starting at Pratt Institute in NYC. I chose an ALA accredited program, because this was important to me. Also, as I know myself and know that I don't work well online, I went with an in person school.
I don't have any great advice yet, but hopefully I'll be able to tell you something informative soon!
Good luck and please feel free to keep in touch! :)
All the best,
Genna

Permalink Reply by Genna Sarnak on March 27, 2011 at 8:42pm Glad I could be of help! I'll be sure to keep you posted on my progress.
I hope you find something that's a good fit for you. I was lucky enough to talk to a few Pratt alums before I got into the school. It was interesting to see the career path each one had chosen and hear their thoughts on the school. I'd continue asking around to see if you can find someone who did an online course vs. in person.
Talk to you soon! :)
