MFAs: Why, Where, and How To Apply

Nancy Rawlinson dispelled the daunting MFA application process with practical advice like the difference between low-res and full-time programs, who to tap for recommendations, to tips on writing critical essays, and how to pick which program is right for you -- and much more.
A successful writing teacher, editor and coach, Rawlinson will field some questions as they arise in the discussion forum here. Please use this space to share experiences, information and more for the MFA-bound, and those still on the fence.
By the way, it's not too late to purchase a copy of the She Writes Webinar powerpoint and audio recording. It is chock-full of information and insight in what it takes to get into that MFA program you're dreaming about.

The statement of purpose is my challenge at the moment. I have read ALL the advice I can find several times. I have written copious notes. I dream about it. I recite possible sentences in it to…Continue

What is everyone doing to pass the time until they hear back from MFA programs?

What programs are you looking into? I'm interested in UC Davis and Cal Arts.

Franny, I know as a prolific recommendation writer myself, that yes, the letter can be time consuming to produce. But: any creative writer you have worked with in a pedagogical setting should be happy to write one for you. All teachers get great satisfaction from seeing their student go on to do great things -- and teachers also know that writing recs comes with the territory. So don't feel shy to ask the workshop leaders that you know! As long as you give them plenty of notice, organize your materials well for them, and give thanks afterwards, I'll bet they won't mind a bit.

My goal is to apply to 8 low residence programs for admission next Summer. I have been out of school for over 40 years. So I am having difficulty selecting people to write letters of support. It is pretty burdensome so I am uncomfortable asking the writer whose workshops I've attended for years. Two writers that have been in retreats and workshops with me have agreed to write letters. Any other ideas?

Hi H'Rina. What is the difference between this group and the other - MFA Creative Writers - please?

Oh! Maybe I should be starting discussions rather than commenting. Let me try.

As I get closer to finalising portfolio and my choice of schools, I keep reminding myself of the value of the application process itself, something else Nancy pointed to. I have to take some distance from my writing and describe it. I have to take myself seriously as a writer. I have to interrogate what I want from the writing life. And so on. All of this has been and continues to be good for me as a writer.

Since the webinar, I have spent a lot of time on (in?) the Poets and Writers Speakeasy, following discussions about the various MFA programmes. This was one of Nancy's pieces of advice, and for me it's been the best way to get detailed insights into the programmes, including what the locales are like.
