I'm having my first baby in eleven weeks. As an already established professional writer, used to going to conferences, traveling to book festivals and to do readings, I'm facing a big change in my life! None of these things include babysitting or make it obvioius that a small child is welcome. So I'm curious...Does anybody know if there are mom-friendly (that is, kid-friendly) writers' conferences?

My husband and I fell in love in the Caymans. It's our favorite place to travel. I LOVE it there. Very cool for you!
Hilarious--us too! Jon worked for the Cayman Marine Lab and I worked as a cook in the hospital and training horses for a beach riding operation. We lived there for three years after college.

Maybe a January trip is in order??? It is so up to date now--they have a gorgeous Books & Books who will be hosting the event, not like when we lived there.
I will just miss you in LA. I will be at B&N Grove on October 29th. Interesting that you write about adoption and I have 3 adopted. We should take this conversation off into another realm. I'll FB you and you do the same!
I'll be taking my 2 1/2 month old baby with me to pre-release book signings as early as this January and I'm wondering how that will go. Fortunately, my publisher is willing to help out at places like the ALA, etc, but I'm hoping my husband or mother will be able to accompany me t other things. I think it's fabulous that your 10 year old was able to watch your 3 year old!
That is because she is a saint.

A saint at 10! She's doing pretty good! :-)
Well, I don't have kids yet--my first is coming in 10 weeks. BUT...I do love teenagers, in all their smart-ass, wise-cracking, rebellious ways. When she's 14, I am sure that you'll find many new ways to appreciate her in all her hormonal awful/wonderful-ness. :-)
By the way, since you adopted from Africa, I think you'd be interested in my forthcoming novel, a coming-of-age tale set in a poor township in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. And the protagonist is 14....:-) You can see details on my SheWrites blog page. Here's the link: http://www.shewrites.com/profiles/blogs/this-thing-called-the-future
Oh this would be wonderful... I can imagine it as a great learning experience for children as well!
It is, Anjati, as long as they're old enough to appreciate it. the ten year old loves it. The three year old thinks it's one party after another!
Courtney, I was kind of thinking of a conference where kids were accomodated with activities and babysitting while parents did their writing activities. A sort of "camp" so to speak, only the focus for adults was on writing. I'm pretty sure nothing like that exists....yet. :-)
I am completely on board for this if it should happen or if it is ever found. It's tough enough for one of us to get away--nearly impossible for both my husband and I to go. And since I'm the main childcare person in the house, I'd love to have others take care of them while I learn / write / network...without having to connive my husband into going too!
