Beth, I'd say send them along too--we try to focus on all aspects of labor, birth, adoption fertility, pregnancy, etc, not so much parenting, but I think that our list of subjects can't help but encompasses motherhood, absolutely.
That sounds contradictory...so I'll stay with my first impulse; send them along and we'll take a look. Thanks for asking.

Victoria, what a sweet "pause" plea there, to take in the transition, the threshold of autumn, and letting the kids stream back into the community of teachers we trust them to. And Brenda, I too love those side by side projects--summer went by all too soon, I think yarn shopping was as close as it got for my daughter and I, but we love to sit side by side immersed in drawing, or knitting, but it has been awhile. I'm trying to breathe into the change of adding teaching into my routine. I think being older means better boundaries around it; when a grad student I remember teaching used to take over everything. Now I try to be fully present in the classroom, fully present when I'm home.

Leaving the safety of home as a kid to go to new classrooms would be the childhood memory of this time (we moved a lot). Bright colors of autumn leaves, dual anxiety and excitement of new classmates, new teacher. Funny to realize childen everywhere are full of that same energy, as are thousands of teachers (anxious and excited) as they prepare to encirlce the kids with love, inspiration, and just enough challenge to keep them focused. Back to school - what a double edged sword. I love the freedom to write without interruption, but I miss the giggles and the frequent distractions. I miss knowing what they are doing, hearing their stories and glancing out the office window to see neighborhood children engaged in bits of imagination and creativity. I was the mother who cried for a week when my oldest daughter headed off to kindergarten. I was the mom today who walked my fifth and second grader into school and chatted with other parents. I am the mom who will watch the clock slowly pass and pick them up at the front door of the school. Well, I probably will go early and take a peek at the classes filled today with new students. Granted, it is the first day of school and I have sort of wandered around lost in quiet spaces today. Although there are so many reasons to have them out of my office, especially as deadlines loom, I now realize they will be long gone and out of the house writing their own stories all to soon. To those new mothers, writing with kids underfoot gets easier as they gain independence! And for those whose children are creeping into double digits, there is the stark reality that the nest will someday be empty and time will have gone by way to fast.

Yes, Victoria! My youngest is starting preschool. I will no longer have to write on my laptop while locked in the bathroom! I can't wait to write anywhere I want in the house!

Yes! My daughter and I are are both participating in 'Project Sketchbook' , her theme is 'Help' (teenage wasteland) and mine is 'Boy and Girls'. We are each writing poems and in our own voices and applying our unique artistic touch to our moleskins. It's such an interesting bonding project because while we are working on different themes and lost in our own thoughts and designs, we sit together and talk about techniques, life, school, writing, how weird Max is (brother) because he sits around making fun of us... It's a fall project and one that is rich with discovery for both of us in many ways.
