I got this great idea from my Costco newsletter.  Seriously.  The author "Of Love and War: 1864" used Costco's photo center to create cards advertising his book for an upcoming signing.  Here's what he did: he uploaded a photo (or other image) and made 6X7 1/2" cards of his book: $14.99 plus tax for 50 photo cards in lustre finish with cards.  And then with his inkjet printer added the novel's plot summary on the back.  He had this to say, "On photo paper the ink is slow to dry and may smear. Catch the printed cards as they emerge from the printer and keep them separated until dry."  Good idea, eh?

Great Idea. It would also work well if you want to put your story information on a table at a writers conference.

Wonderful idea! Another person suggested getting your FB or Twitter followers involved by posting an invitation to have them submit their names to you to be used in an upcoming story.

In a fictional short story?

Not bad! There are a zillion things we can do for free or very cheaply. I'm collecting ideas, and I'm a photographer so I like this one.

Another idea that I have been working on is stickers. Here in New York, we go around tagging stickers on everything. Also leaving stickers in coffee shops, stores, and anywhere else where they let you leave flyers is a good idea. I even leave a few on the train. On the sticker you can put one line from the book that will draw people in and the cover picture and website. Every little thing helps!

I use two-sided business cards I get through vistaprint - with the heavy stock. I can get about 1000 for about $10 - with printed text to my website, etc.

I have some experience to share on this: at a conference last summer I heard multiple times "do not hand agents ANYTHING". However, I had cards with my photo on them and every agent who saw them asked if they could keep one. I am guessing it is so they can put a face with a name after the conference. Anyway, I would strongly suggest that if you do get specialized cards - put your picture on them!

I have found that people prefer receiving bookmarks rather than postcards or business cards.  They are more apt to keep and use them.  I get mine at nextdayflyers.com Take a look at my most recent book promotion tip.

If you are concerned about the ink drying slowly on photo paper, you could put the plot summary on an oversized sticker on the back of the photo.

How fabulous is this?  All these tips!  I love you SheWriters!
