Hi Everyone,

I think for writers everywhere, this is SUCH a universal question. I believe that many of us worry that we aren't writing enough, or don't have time to write as much as we'd like. It's one of those great writing mysteries. In order to be a successful writer/author, how OFTEN do I need to write? How much TIME do I need to devote to the art? Is one hour a day enough? How about five hours a week? More? Less?

I don't think there is an exact answer. But it always helps me to know that I'm generally speaking, 'going with the flow of the traffic.'

I've started a discussion on my blog: http://theintrinsicwriter.blogspot.com/ Feel free to offer your insights!

Generally, I try to write 2-3 hours every day. On a good day I can get up to 5 or 6 hours. It may be in short stolen increments, but I write everyday. I'm not the fastest writer, which is part of the reason I try to write as much as I can. There are days I don't get to write a single word. Those days are the worst for me.

Hi Katherine,

Two or three hours a day? That's great! I have days like that, but not all. I know what you mean about the days when you just can't seem to find the time to write. It really is an awful feeling.

I have an advantage over a lot of writers. I'm the single cat lady in my family. I use writing as a stress reliever after taking care of my 96 year old grandmother (dementia is fun and can be funny-please don't think I'm being mean- I love Gram and she's a card shark-but when she's not out in the clouds-she can be very witty) and my two parents who are  in their 70's and not in the best health. (All three live in the same house) I go home and sit at the computer until I'm too tired to think. The stories help keep me gronded and sane. What I'm trying to say is we as writers, we have full lives BUT we still need to take care of ourselves. Even if it is only is only 10 or 15 minutes a day

I try and reach a word goal for a day. Usually it's about 5,000 words, but like for today it's 17,000 words. I spend all day writing when I have a goal like that.

Usually it's about four or five consecutive hours a day. On a school day it's a little less because I have school.

Daily. Ask me how often I clean my house or exercise and that would be a far more interesting answer. But writing? That's my existence.
