I will check it out! On self-publishing, do you mind if I ask if you spend a lot of time marketing your work? Who did you publish with?

It really depends. Something as simple as an hour a day on twitter can help. I went with Amazon and Smashwords. Tomorrow or Friday {because I met the requirements for the Smashwords Premium Catalog, it goes to Sony and Barnes and Noble, then through them {and others} it'll be live in 32 different countries. :)

It's also part of Amazon's KDP Select.

Now it's word of mouth, tweeting, and setting up blog reviews/interviews. :)

How cool --I'm so glad that is working out for you. I've spent 9 hours today tweeting, facebooking, SheWriting, blogging, etc. I only read and reply to what I feel applies to me or what I have learned from (that's a lot) and I like making wonderful connections. (There's just too much out there to read everything!)

Do you have any in store gigs or panels scheduled or do you just promote online?

Hi Carole,

each self published writer has to learn how to balance, writing the next book, and using their social networks to stay in touch with everyone and help promote their books.

It's easy to get distracted by checking out and reading blog posts. We have to find a limit that works for us individually. :)

I'm definitely trying to find a balance! I don't want to spend more time on social websites than writing, which is what I did yesterday. I also have a problem with brevity --I don't have enough of it! I guess learning to keep it short will come along, out of necessity, I'm sure!

If I don't get a novel out this year I will be considering the self-publising route, or finding an agent to represent me.

I think that social media can certainly be addicting. It certainly is difficult to find the balance between family, work, writing and social media. I know that I have learned a lot about the subject of my novel through social media so that makes me even more likely to want to check on some of my contacts.

I don't know that I'm addicted so much as feeling pressured to keep up with every single message that comes in. Also, there are quite a few people I do want to respond to but I'm starting to drown in my In-box. There's got to be a better way. Time management is necessary but how do you decide between reading the important marketing blog or sharing a note with someone you want to connect to. I've noticed that I'm behind in my writing today so as soon as this is posted, I've got to log out or else!!

Hi all,

I’m new here and really excited by the community you have going on; I suppose this would be my introduction. I’m a 21 year old law school student and I’ve been writing since as long as I can remember. I’ve got 5 novels which I’ve completed, of which only two are good and worth my querying agents over. I do some short stories under this same pseudonym (using my real name has caused an issue or two in the past) but I don’t think it compares to the massive story that a novel can provide.

My main novel is a throwback to 1930’s pulp and sci-fi, with some alternate history thrown in, similar to Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow if anybody’s seen that film. It’s also stream of consciousness because I loved Joyce too much not to follow in his footsteps. Women’s issues always play key role in my works and I’ve always been interested in some of the famous women writers like Woolf, Plath, and Atwood. That’s another reason I really like this community, even though it isn’t exclusively for women, because most writers have been and still are male. I always encourage any of my girlfriends who like to write to do more, although I think I’m the most obsessed of all of them :)

Your book sounds like steampunk! I love that genre.

I love the genre too, although I think mine is closer to something like dieselpunk, since there's lots of art deco style in the settling. I always thought clashed a bit with the Victorian inspired ideas about architecture and fashion that really drive steampunk.

And thanks for that encouragement; I try to keep my friends writing who really enjoy it, but most of them have found that since starting college it's been difficult, especially for the people who are in grad school and beyond. It doesn't always given the opportunity for the 2000 words a day that Stephen King recommends XD
