Carole,

brevity is a major key in it. Finding a balance that works for you and your schedule is paramount. It's very easy to get caught up in promotion and not have time to write and vice versa.

That's why I suggested starting with an hour a day or evening on twitter, connecting to other Authors and readers. That will let you get your foot int the door and see what interests your future readers hold. Brevity and tight sentences is the key to twitter. 140 characters max. {not words, characters which includes numbers, letter, ect}

Just don't get addicted to twitter and facebook and myspace, and reading every blog you cross, ect. It's real easy to fall into that habit and it will sap your strength and leave you feeling drained. Keep your writing schedule, just  add an hour a day for promotions as well.

I had to shut my computer down today while I babysat my grandson, but after 2 days of 8 and 9 hours online, I really needed it, as well as a reminder to prioritize. Thanks for this --it helps a lot!

I have a novel as yet without a name (top contenders are The Currency of Heaven or Unwritten.)

I have about 100 word document pages and the entire story is already written but a couple of major characters need to be developed. The characters are real in my mind but not on paper.

Brief synopsis of the story is as follows. Anna, the main character, is the youngest child in a large family and she doesn't like the change that comes about as she watches all of her beloved siblings grow up and start their lives as adults. She wants everything to stay the same and is governed by fear particularly fear of change and fear of the unknown.

Chapter One starts with Anna going to the library in search of a poem for a classroom assignment (she is a second year high school student.) The librarian who is quirky and autistic gives her a book of poems written by a man whose picture on the back jacket seems to be engaging her and begging. The librarian shows her a lament in the book mourning the loss of his beloved. She looks for his beloved but all she finds when she googles his name is that he was a Holocost survivor and lost every single member of his family.

 

Chapter two finds her on a camping trip with her family. During a hike, she is hot and sweaty and gives into the temptation to run through the waterfall and instead of finding a rock wall or cave full of long lost treasure, she finds herself in an in-between space that is a junction between parallel universes. She realizes she is not in Kansas so to speak and spies an old English cottage (realizing that the space is being created to look like something familiar to her.) She knocks on the door and hears footsteps and the latch of the front door rattles and as the door opens, she recognizes the librarian who is the keeper of this between places place. Because the realm is out of time-space, the house is a tesseract and unfolds as Anna moves about the space. Eventually it unfolds into a huge warehouse type structure full of bookshelves of books as far as the eye can see.

 

The books represent the story of  every person that ever lived.

 

There was an alcove of shelves that Anna was drawn to but there was a sadness that weighed down that space and the sadness was palpable. Viola (the librarian) explained that these were the people that had their lives stolen from them. Some people live short lives that were destined to be short but the lives in those shelves were stolen from the people. Anna was cradling one of the books in her arms and Viola told her the book was the poets Beloved and she was given the opportunity to make it right. The only advice Viola gave her was to not allow fear govern her decisions but to be ruled by love because love is the currency of heaven.

I love the concept of liminal spaces, so powerful for female fiction, it kind of reminds of some of Margaret Atwood's books, I love also the idea of a library that houses the stories of every person that ever lived, what a great premise, good luck with it, love to hear more about as you further develop. And yes I agree that "Unwritten" is a great title for it.
