Oh wow....I love that story line, bringing in the wife is brilliant.  I also think the short novella style is the way to go, i don't think i have a War and Peace in me.  My style is sort of Jen Lancasterish maybe not quite as snarky.  I do a blog called exwifenewlife and I will be pulling from there and adding on.  I am trying an experiment, and putting excerpts on my blog for people to comment on and maybe draw in some readers.

Thanks, Amy.  I appreciate that.  Once I'm done with this 2nd release, I'm definitely going to write and publish much shorter pieces.  Longer works are exhausting, even if gratifying.

I just read your most recent blog post, "You Again."  That sounds like a really cool title to a book, story, or movie.  Your descriptions are so vivid without being elaborate.  I wish I had that kind of skill.  I'll subscribe and look forward to reading your next post over there.  :)

 I am just putting a novel to bed. It has been through many drafts and two writing groups and I have just finished editing it again so I am hoping it is ready to send out the door.  I write poetry, essays, short stories, and children's fiction (6-12). I have a penchant for humorous anthropomorphic fantasy so the children's novel I am just finishing is an anthropomorphic fantasy with a bit of science fiction. Maybe a quirky kids ... "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" ala "Wind in the Willows", haa ha.  I also have another kids novel I am working on, several essays, a short short story, and a Young Adult Novel on the back burner.

Hi, I'm Leslie and new to the group and to She Writes. I've written one women's fiction manuscript, but I think that is my "practice" novel and will forever remain in a box on a shelf. Recently, I finished a 2nd manuscript- a YA contemporary novel called HOPE IN BLOOM. I'm currently beginning to query agents. Below is the summary portion of my query letter. This site looks great, and I'm so happy to be part of this community. I just hope I can figure out all the things I can and should do on She Writes!

HOPE IN BLOOM:

All girls have hopes. Unfortunately, some hopes die before they have a chance to bloom.

 

Eighteen-year-old Mallory’s dream of the perfect senior year is disintegrating. Her father’s a victim of long-term unemployment, her brother drags a shadow of misery around the house, and her sister is missing. The only bright spot left in her life is her boyfriend—that is until she catches his lips attached to another girl’s at the end-of-summer party. After barely surviving a disastrous first day of school, Mallory lands at a mini-mart known for selling more winning lottery tickets than any other store for hundreds of miles. Desperate for a spot of hope, she’s unable to resist the allure of playing the biggest game of chance.

As Mallory’s senior year continues to unravel, she becomes increasingly dependent on her lottery hope. Each set of tickets gifts her with a dream of a different life, one in which new adventures replace the suffering that surrounds her. Soon, though, her lottery pipe dream becomes an absolute necessity, and Mallory’s habits and hopes lead her astray.

With a little help from a new friend—the tough yet totally hot transfer student who’s got struggles of his own—Mallory just may see that a jackpot win isn’t the only magic the lottery delivers.

As my debut novel The Map of Lost Memories careens toward publication on August 21, I'm five chapters into my new novel, as yet untitled. In a nutshell, this one is about an American woman born in Vietnam in 1937, who becomes a culinary anthropologist and spends her time studying and preserving Vietnam’s food history, as well as feeding homesick American soldiers. I want to explore aspects of domestic daily life and Vietnamese culture that are not generally written about in fiction that takes place during the war. But I was raised on Nancy Drew, so of course there will also be a murder, a kidnapping, a helicopter chase and plenty of family secrets.

Hi guys, I'm new to this group and shewrites. I've been writing some short stories lately, posting them on my short story blog (storiesthatareshort.com). Through some of my strories I have an idea for a novel I'm gonna start working on for nanowrimo. It's going to be an alien invasion that's told from the pov of the aliens. I'm hoping for humor, but we'll see.

Hi, just wanted to introduce myslef.  I'm a teacher working on my first young adult novel.  I have a few chapters written and like the idea of having people other than myself and my friends read some of my work, and doing the same for someone else!

I don't know what I'm working. It was creative narrative non-fiction but the personal thread made it sound more memoir-ish. Now I'm thinking of presenting the story as fiction so I can make the character of the mother a little more crazy. It's the story of twins born 3 months premature and the coping mechanisms we use to get through scary experiences. As creative non-fiction it is a has geeky cognitive science spin. As memoir it feels self-indulgent. As a novel I can explore the mother's fantasy that she can control the laws of physics through her active imagination.

One thing is for sure--finding the time to write and sitting down and writing is the same challenge whether I think I'm writing fiction or non-fiction.

Hello Ladies,

I'm currently working on my third novel (third series, I like to juggle things) which is a science fiction thriller. I'm excited about it, but horribly stuck trying to take the jock out of my main character.
