I'm getting my current manuscript ready to send to a novel contest that asks for the first 50 pages and a no-longer-than-two-page outline of the rest of the novel. My book is divided into four parts, so my preference would be for the outline to looks something like this (I've really oversimplified.) Here's my working query synopsis--the one I'm sending out to agents who identify themselves as politically progressive after I tweak it a bit (I'd welcome comments on it as well. Too long?:
When political dissident and philandering husband Islam Goldberg-Jones writes his memoir after three decades of incarceration, he recounts how his infidelities devastated his wife, Hoshea “Shea” Weber, a Mennonite woman whose image became iconic for the nonviolent revolution that helped bring down the fascist Christian Republic regime that ruled the United States from 2045-2087. But his memoir also describes how he, Weber and thousands of ordinary people involved in resistance to the regime sacrificed themselves to make a better future possible. My novel, Shea, reframes the biblical narrative of the prophet Hosea and his wife, Gomer the prostitute, by switching the genders. Shea, the prophetic figure, uses the emotional pain caused by her husband’s personal betrayals to challenge the atrocities being committed by her government in the name of religion.
