The place to share good ideas about where to learn about writing, and to ask questions about places you're considering

I've attended two writing conferences, The Sewanee Writer's Conference, and the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley, and would absolutely recommend both. Sewanee is a more intense learning experience. Squaw a good learning experience and a great place to connect with other writers. I walked away from both conferences with friendship made over only days but that have lasted for years. I'm even doing an AWP panel this spring with some of my fellow students and faculty at Sewanee.

Meg,

Are you at AWP next month?  If so, what's the title of the panel - I'll make sure to attend!

I've done Squaw Valley and highly recommend it!
I attended the Surrey International Writers Conference in Surrey BC several years ago with a group of friends from my writing group, and it was a very worthwhile, eye-opening experience. In one particularly memorable workshop, we all had our minds blown by Donald Maass. ("Make it worse" has now become one of our mantras.) Another great thing was the "Blue Pencil" session where you could receive a critique from an editor on the first 5 pages of your manuscript. The entire weekend was packed full of opportunities to learn and make new connections. I and my writing buddies all came away from this conference feeling like we'd "leveled up". It was a big chunk o' change to spend, as I came all the way from Chicago, but it was well worth it.
I'm attending the Backspace Agent-Author Seminar in November--anyone else going? This is my first one!
I would recommend the Women's Fiction Festival in Matera, Italy. Here is a link to it: http://www.womensfictionfestival.com/cms/index.php?lang=en. It's an intimate setting in a beautiful city. I went in 2008 and made many good contacts. I plan on going again in 2011.
I second Squaw Valley -- I'm going back to be part of the alumni reading panel this year. Also, don't count out genre conferences. Thrillerfest, the annual conference of International Thriller Writers, has been great the two years I have gone. The published authors are very approachable. There's a portion that focuses on craft and agent pitch fest.

If you are near the southeast, I highly recommend the Alabama Writer's Conclave in mid-July.  Been attending it for several years.  It's friendly, helpful and I always learn a lot.  www.alabamawritersconclave.org

I went to Squaw Valley in August 2008. A helpful experience.
I am in Atlanta.  Do you know of any other conferences in the southeast?  I'm aware of the Atlanta Writer's conference in May, but have never attended.

Is anyone going to the January 19-21 Writers Digest Conference in New York City? There are a variety of workshops to choose from, and a 50+ agent pitch slam. I'm going with two of my Atlanta Writers Club writer friends and we're planning to attend different sessions and share information. And, , , , , come home with an agent!

Is anyone going to AWP in Washington DC next week? Is there any kind of She-Writers meet-up planned? Sorry if I'm asking a redundant question... I've been off the threads for awhile.

Thanks!
