Shawn- I agree, you have to find your own method. I read a bunch of author book on their process, deliberately reading those with very different methods and picked which I though would work for me. I feel like it's still a fluid thing. I have my basic-butt in chair start typing rule, but when I'm not clear on my intention I get a little lost.
Learning what trips you up, what gets you going, it's just part of the whole writing process.
I have an app called Contour that is a screenwriting developer. It asks questions and you fill in the blanks as you go. I sometimes put in the basic of my novel to make sure I'm hitting all the marks of storytelling.
• Goodreads: early today I was adding books in the to-read category of books that I own...GOOD GRIEF! I think I need an intervention. I'll never catch-up.
Comment by MaryLynn Bast on March 20, 2012 at 7:08pm I skip scene as well. I find that I get the main part of the story down, to get my ideas out there, then I go back and fill it in more details and add scenes as they are needed.
Comment by Jessica Vealitzek on March 20, 2012 at 6:23pm I skip scenes, too. I'm on my first novel and didn't want to lose momentum after I'd finally decided to commit to it. It made the writing more fun but because I jumped around, I often had to edit as I wrote, too. It got a bit messy and confusing at times. Still, I'm not sure I would, or could, do it differently.
Comment by Jennifer Hart on March 20, 2012 at 4:42pm Lynne and Teicha and Lisa, I'm so happy to see you talking about skipping scenes. I was stuck today and decided to just skip and wow it worked so well. I can see where I'm going more clearly now and I'm not feeling as though my characters are trapped .
