Novelist group chat today at 1 EST. There has been a lot of chatter on thread about self-publishing, so I'm thinking we might talk about the pros and cons of traditional and self publishing. Please come share your thoughts!

For some unknown reason (a bit nuts, I think), I went directly to Kindle and Lulu and formatted my two novels myself, according to their directions.  Each publisher asked for different formats, and it was only after many mistakes, and many contacts with "Help" folks, did my ebooks emerge.  I learned a lot about publishing, but in retrospect, I wish I had used either Createspace or Smashwords so that I could have also produced a POD at the end of all that work.  A book in hand is worth two in cyberspace when one is marketing, I've discovered.  Good luck, Samantha.  Whatever you do, it will be a satisfying experience when you see your words in print.

Good luck on self publishing and keep us posted on how its going.

Samantha, you're welcome. Yeah there does lol. Smashwords has their own guide {free ebook download} for their stipulations.

Thanks for the heads up Catrina. I'm still trying to figure it all out. :-) There needs to be a Createspace for Dummies book. lol

I published my novel Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever through BookSurge, which was merged into CreateSpace.  I bought a package from them that included both print and eBook. I'm happy with the finished product  I then hired a formatter to convert the eBook for Smashwords, as I'm not very tehnical.  For $25, it was worth it.  The good news it the book has been optioned for the big screen.

Group chat today at 1 EST - no topic; free for all. Sorry I can't make it. Am helping son settle in new apartment. ("Some assembly required.")

Comment by Catrina Barton on June 12, 2012 at 9:19pm

Samantha pay attention to the creatspace requirements for the cover art. They are very picky about it.
