Comment by V. B. Bernard 1 hour ago Hello everyone!
My name is V and I am currently writing the first draft of my first novel. I am a stay at home mom to a young son, so I write late at night and between nap times. And because of my young boss's unpredictable nature, I strive to write between 1,500 and 2,000 words a day.
I am excited about being apart of this group! The reading I have done so thus far is inspiring and makes me want to increase my knowledge base. I also hope I can add information as I ferry down my own literary path too.
So thanks and happy reading!
-V
Comment by Rysa Walker 1 hour ago Hi, Meg -
I've had pretty good luck in the short run with 99¢ sales as an indie author, but the boost didn't seem to last very long. That's what I've heard from several friends, as well.
I also have some big news -- I'm no longer an indie author. My book has been selected as the first prize winner in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards and will be re-published as Timebound this coming October. I'm still kind of reeling from the news.
The Grand Prize, which will up the stakes to include a $50K advance on royalties, is still up for grabs, however. That's based on the total number of votes at Amazon's ABNA website between now and May 29th. The winner will be announced on June 15th at a ceremony in Seattle. If any of you have a moment to stop in and vote, I would really, really appreciate it. (So would my kids' college funds!!) The voting site is at http://www.amazon.com/abna. Thanks!!
Comment by Meg Waite Clayton 2 hours ago I wondered if we could talk about book pricing for a minute? Random House just started a 99¢ promo for my second novel, The Wednesday Sisters, in part to build audience for the release of The Wednesday Daughters this summer, and I was kind of blown away with the sales numbers from yesterday. I happened to have an L.A. Times Op-ed run Monday, when the promo went live, and that got a lot of shares, but I've had L.A. Times Op-Eds before and it has never resulted in this kind of sales pop.
So I'm wondering - and would love esp to have indie authors weigh in on this - is your experience that lower prices over the long run result in considerably more sales over time? or is it just a short-term thing that dissipates even if you keep the price low?
Thanks!
Meg

Comment by Meg Waite Clayton on May 12, 2013 at 8:46am >this is a marathon, not a sprint
I have been using this analogy for a long time, in part because I started writing my (first) novel while training for my (only) marathon :-)
So actually, for me, writing a novel is easier than a marathon, as I am willing to do it again and again.
It's definitely true for marketing too.

Comment by Lynn Purvis-Yund on May 9, 2013 at 7:07pm Wow, great interview Niki, I'm glad you address the commercialism about publishing, you are so right on about the trends, sadly. I'm also impressed about your publishing agency
I just downloaded your book, and did get it through the indie store- great idea. I was struck by the fact it's in little old Athens, GA, - my niece lives there.
I only just started the book but I love the intro about fugue, strangely enough I was just thinking about that pattern, ( read about it in Godel, Esher and Bach, by Hofstadter) and how to apply it to writing. I love the music, arts reference too. I'm an artist ( paintings, drawings) and plan to write with the thinking process of painting. Anyway, your book has an aesthetic to it from the beginning that adds a classic quality, it's beautiful
Also lots of good stuff on your blogs, etc.
Comment by Niki Tulk on May 9, 2013 at 11:40am Thanks so much Jessica! I do feel there is a deep seismic shift going on in the writing of women and others "othered" by mainstream cultural media ...and I am proud to be sharing that journey with some many incredible artists, thinkers and activists.
Comment by Jessica Vealitzek on May 9, 2013 at 11:31am Niki - love your point of view, esp: "I feel as if I am a part of a shift in our world, that is about reclaiming what is ours—our stories, dreams, and the ways we choose to share these with each other." Couldn't agree more!
