Comment by Rysa Walker on May 22, 2013 at 4:20pm Thanks, Deborah! Glad to see that the pity plea at the end concerning the college fund pulled you in. I'm thinking of tacking this picture of my youngest on at the end. What do you think-- does he look pathetic enough? ;)
Comment by Deborah J. Brasket on May 22, 2013 at 3:18pm Way to go, Rysa, on winning first prize in Amazon's Break-through Novel Award. I'll go to that site and see if I can pump up the numbers for a grand-prize win. For the kids, of course :)
Comment by AJ Wiliams on May 22, 2013 at 3:08pm Hi everyone, my name is AJ and I have 2 books currently self published with a 3rd on the way to being self published sometime next month. I am currently working on another book that is for a different series that is pushing me to really think. I love it.
With writing I am a stay at home mom of 2 small kids, well one getting ready for kindergarten but still small and the other under 3. I have only been a SAHM for just over a year now, and I have to say it took a lot of adjustment but it allowed me the time to really work on my writing as I felt I could not give writing the time I needed between school, kids, husband, and working 40-60 hours a week. My writing folder with started stories says that for me LOL.
Even though I stay home I am active with my kids, and strive to work with them on the importance of learning and preparing them for school. So if I get 1000 words a day I am thrilled. That is my own personal goal, but there are days such as Sundays where if I get 4000 I am super happy
I look forward to talking and getting to know everyone
Comment by Cassandra Dunn on May 22, 2013 at 2:06pm Welcome, V! Good for you for taking the time for yourself to do something you love. It makes you a better mom! I got back into writing the same way, one nap time at a time. I look forward to hearing about your progress!
Comment by Kelly Hand on May 22, 2013 at 2:02pm I agree with Niki that combining being a stay at home mom with writing can provide you with a good routine. It worked that way for me when I was working on a first novel (still unpublished, but I do have a second one out there published independently). Now that my kids are in school, I have to balance my writing with another work-from-home job, and I am less productive than when I was just a stay at home mom and had little scraps of time for writing. Motherhood is great, but when they're little, you have a lot of time to think and plan even when you're with them. Some moms could even do what Edward P. Jones did with his great novel, The Known World. He "wrote it" in his head over many years and then finally got it all down on paper. Good luck.
Comment by Niki Tulk on May 22, 2013 at 1:37pm Hi V
That's exactly how I wrote my novel "Shadows and Wings" ... and then added three more to the children, but I resonate totally! I even had the same daily word limits! And now, 11 years and many nap times later, it is published. DO IT LADY!!!!!! Motherhood lends an incredible rhythm and simmering quality to work ... the constant revisiting of work over time can help you go deep. Peace.
Comment by V. B. Bernard on May 22, 2013 at 12:29pm Hello everyone!
My name is V and I am currently writing the first draft of my first novel. I am a stay at home mom to a young son, so I write late at night and between nap times. And because of my young boss's unpredictable nature, I strive to write between 1,500 and 2,000 words a day.
I am excited about being apart of this group! The reading I have done so thus far is inspiring and makes me want to increase my knowledge base. I also hope I can add information as I ferry down my own literary path too.
So thanks and happy reading!
-V
Comment by Rysa Walker on May 22, 2013 at 11:49am Hi, Meg -
I've had pretty good luck in the short run with 99¢ sales as an indie author, but the boost didn't seem to last very long. That's what I've heard from several friends, as well.
I also have some big news -- I'm no longer an indie author. My book has been selected as the first prize winner in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards and will be re-published as Timebound this coming October. I'm still kind of reeling from the news.
The Grand Prize, which will up the stakes to include a $50K advance on royalties, is still up for grabs, however. That's based on the total number of votes at Amazon's ABNA website between now and May 29th. The winner will be announced on June 15th at a ceremony in Seattle. If any of you have a moment to stop in and vote, I would really, really appreciate it. (So would my kids' college funds!!) The voting site is at http://www.amazon.com/abna. Thanks!!
Comment by Meg Waite Clayton on May 22, 2013 at 10:40am I wondered if we could talk about book pricing for a minute? Random House just started a 99¢ promo for my second novel, The Wednesday Sisters, in part to build audience for the release of The Wednesday Daughters this summer, and I was kind of blown away with the sales numbers from yesterday. I happened to have an L.A. Times Op-ed run Monday, when the promo went live, and that got a lot of shares, but I've had L.A. Times Op-Eds before and it has never resulted in this kind of sales pop.
So I'm wondering - and would love esp to have indie authors weigh in on this - is your experience that lower prices over the long run result in considerably more sales over time? or is it just a short-term thing that dissipates even if you keep the price low?
Thanks!
Meg
Comment by Niki Tulk on May 12, 2013 at 9:03am Dear Lynn, you have boosted my day (year? life?) with your response and connection, thank you. I hope you enjoy the book -- do let me know your thoughts on it! It is a total thrill to be sharing the world of Lara and Tomas with others ... Peace and all things good to you ... Niki
