I learned about step outlines in class recently and I've found them very helpful in focusing a story. Does anyone else use them? I've also seen different methods of step outlining online, different than the one I learned and use, so if you do use step outlines, what's your method? I'm interested because I've found that the different methods I've seen each have their own benefit, so if you have a particular way I'm hoping I could learn something new!

For those who aren't sure what a Step Outline is, a quick google search should come up with something, or you can click on my profile which should show my blog post on step outlines.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Aleksandra
I wouldn't think of beginning to actually write the script without having made a step outline, or scene by scene outline. Actually I first do a beat sheet where I created a numbered list of all the major events of the story. THEN I do the outline. My first version of it is done with 3 x 5 cards. I put the scene heading on it and then a sentence or two that describes what happens in the scene.
Then I sequence these. From that I can see the movie. I can also possibly get an idea of where I need help with pacing.
Then I enter these in final draft and revise again.
IT is only after that that I actually start writing action description and dialogue. And since I have it all laid out, I can start at any scene. I don;t have to write from beginning to end.
See this link for a photo that shows a rather complicated outline, involving several storylines. I used different color cards for major storylines/characters.
How do you do and use a step outline?
