I am using Smashwords as a platform, although I haven't uploaded my ebook yet. But will be ready in a couple of days. It seems to be very popular.

If you do your ebook production through them (at no cost), it will be distributed to various ebook sites, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Kobo, Sony, and Fictions are on the distribution schedule as well.
No copyright needed. I use the copyright page of my print copies.
Technically, you could get a copyright for an ebook, but mostly people make ebooks based on the print edition. If you upload a book to Kindle, you need to attach it to a print edition ISBN. At least, you need to provide an ISBN, but I've always hung them off the print editions.
Judith...It is ALWAYS a very good idea to get an ISBN unless, as Marva points out, you have a print edition in which case you can use that one. An important reason to get an ISBN is that altho Smashwords doesn't require an ISBN, you must have one to get in their Premium Catalog, which has some sales advantages. An ISBN also helps a bit to establish copyright if your work gets pirated. Further down the list is that an ISBN simply gives an impression of professionalism.
I am using Smashwords.com for my just released romance book, Second Chances. No ISBN is required. You set the price for the book. Please read the Style Formatting Guide before you upload your manuscript. You can download it for free from Smashwords. Formatting your ms to look good as an ebook isn't as simple as it sounds.
I uploaded Second Chances directly to Amazon for Kindle release. No ISBN is required. Their formatting requirements are different than Smashwords. However Smashwords does have a format that is compatible for reading on Kindle PC. I'm not sure about loading it to an actual Kindle.
I am also releasing Second Chances as a paperback in March. THe paperback will of course have an ISBN.
You can download a 50% sample of my Second Chances from Smashwords.com for free. I would love for you to do so, if for nothing else to look at how it looks as an ebook properly formatted for Smashwords and accepted for inclusion in their Premium Catalogue which requires a review and approval.
Both sites sell in the most popular formats allowing for all the major ebook reader platforms: ePUB, PDF, HTML, LIT, PRC, PDB, FUB, KML, RB. This allows for Sony Reader, Palm, Rocket, and more.
Personally speaking, my ebook sales for Messalina - Devourer of Men spiked once it was listed on All Romance eBooks and my ebook sales overtook my print sales for nearly a quarter. My ebook sales are still healthy on there too. If you click on the title of my book above, it'll take you to the listing.
Of course, your results may vary, but I can't say enough about them.
The author or publisher can list their books on both sites. ISBN is not required.
It is popular. And it's just a couple of people doing their thing. Someone HAD to figure out a way to work out all those ridiculous formats and they have, hence their popularity, I think. We're "partnering" with them as our distribution platform for now. Seems to be working although their visual presence could be improved. One note, when your books move to "premium status" and get listed at the bigger stores, Smashwords is listed as the publisher. For us--a publisher--that's an issue. May not be for an individual writer though. Just so you are aware and can weigh the pros/cons.
