Hi, I'm working on non-fiction parenting book to self-publish on KDP, Smashwords, CreateSpace. Would prefer (a) to have someone else handle the interior/file formatting, and (b) to work with an experienced cover designer on my own, rather than take what the self-pub vendors offer.  Do you agree?  What would you expect to spend on these services?  Recommendations/referrals and words of wisdom much appreciated.  Thank you!!

If you hire a book designer, it can be quite expensive.  You might check out a package on CreateSpace first which is very reasonably priced. I used them for my book. You're welcome to take a look.  It all depends on what your budget is.

Hi, Katherine. I am prejudiced, living with a great graphic designer, but I'd say hiring an independent cover designer is crucial. Covers mean so much in attracting readers. I also think hiring out the interior/file formatting is THE way to go. Even the pros have to watch what's going on very carefully.

Feel free to contact me, and I can have Jeff Fuller send you samples of his cover designs, interior book designs and fees. He's amazingly affordable.

Best!

Thank you Barbara, I would welcome hearing from Jeff.  He can email me at knsweber@gmail.com  Thanks.

I'll have him contact you. It's so much fun finally seeing a face on your manuscript!

Hi, Barbara.  I, too, am self-publishing and looking for an independent cover designer/and interior formatting for my memoir.  My first book.  My free-lance editor is in the final 6 chapters, and then I'm ready to roll.  I've been looking for someone affordable, and referred by another writer.  Jeff sounds promising and I'd be thrilled if you would forward my email address as well.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Lovely. I'll give him your email address, too! Congratulations on nearing the end of the writing process, although frankly it never really ends . . . does it?!

I'm sure you'll hear from Jeff in the next day or two.

Thanks, Barbara.  I'll look forward to hearing from him.  How nice to have a community that shares so willingly.  :D

Hi Barbara, Jeff dropped me an email yesterday afternoon. He's very prompt.  His "general pricing" was a bit high for my budget, however, I do plan to contact him to chat a bit.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Katherine,

Yes, yes, yes to not going through the "self-pub" vendors and to locating and managing the job yourself! I (I'm a book coach/shepherd and editor) have been very very happy -- and my clients as well -- with Ted Ruybal. You can find him at http://www.bluetailbooks.com/ and, if necessary, I can give you his contact info offline. (Dunno why I'm squeamish about this on a private site, but humor me : ) *If* you need any project management, i.e., interpretation/managing etc., I can do this as I have worked with Ted a lot but that's not why I replied at all. I just really believe in him, his work ethic and his design skills. He came highly recommended to me and I am doing the same to you. As for cost . . . "it depends" but that's one of those areas where it pays for itself over and over. Best regards, Christine

Thank you Christine, I really appreciate your experienced feedback and confirmation that I'm on the right track.  Actually, I'm playing a bit of a "shepherd" role with this book myself, and learning in the trenches.  I will check out Ted's site, and feel free to email me any other info if you would like at knsweber@gmail.com.  Many thanks!

Thank you all for your experienced comments.

I have a wonderful formatter that work format for amazon, BN, Smashwords and provides a pdf for me for $20. Cheryl Grey and her contact email is cherylthemysterywriter@gmail.com. I have used her for five books so far.
