In your view, re: the crowd-based process, how do you see distribution happening? How is this any different from regular old word of mouth - or is there a difference?
Comment by Bill Joyce on May 14, 2012 at 7:39am Hello all. We are beginning to bring together talented people in a "CrowdCreative" process that will "bring great characters to life!"
We believe the publishing paradigm shift is going to bring great opportunity for those who embrace the new e-technology. The Crowd will become both the evaluator of quality and the springboard for global success of great works of literature. The real work of publishing is done by the consumer of the books not the printing presses.
Comment by Shawn Lamb on May 14, 2012 at 4:18am The problem about digital media today is the lack of copy protection. On another forum, a fellow author discovered that her e-book from Smashwords was copied and put up on Kindle by someone using a different form of her name. It even had the Smashword "copyright" or stamp still on the 1st page. She notified both Smashwords and Amazon. I advised her to also contact a lawyer. In her case, Smashwords doesn't provide DRM (Digital Rights Management). This may not be a full-proof form of protection, but thieves have to work harder to get around the digital protection. Still, some thieves will take printed books, scan them and tweak them for profit.
With the advent of digital media, POD and the ease of self-publishing, the industry is going through what American did before printing a 'counterfeit' proof currency. In fact, the Treasury Dept is always coming up with new ways to protect money.
Many people cried foul of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act)- those who want all media - movie, music & books - to be free and available without boundaries. However, there were many good factors about protecting digital media in the bill - whether movies or books. Until there is a way to regulate and protect digital and online media, pirates will continue to make rip-offs, and hurt both the creators of the product and the online seller.
Comment by Jo Anne Valentine Simson on May 13, 2012 at 7:49pm It's unfortunate to tar CreateSpace with a broad brush, also, because many honest authors who have no chance to publish through regular channels are able to publish through CreateSpace. Again, it's important to look at reviews and scan sample pages.
Comment by Olga Godim on May 13, 2012 at 3:18pm Zetta, thanks for sharing the article. Quite informative. I'm not sure Amazon is to blame (much), they sell whatever, but who are the authors? It seems they are not really writers but opportunists out for a quick buck. And they muddy the book selling for all of us.
Comment by Zetta Brown on May 13, 2012 at 1:52pm Amazon may be able to get the government to do their bidding, but they should be held accountable for allowing "spam" books to be sold to the public.

If any other merchandiser sold counterfeit goods, don't you think they'd be held accountable?
