I've done giveaways on Goodreads for each new release, but I can't say I got always reviews in exchange. So for my latest book, I not doing a giveaway.

Hi all,

I ran into the same problem with my small press book - my publicist sent out PR materials and  copies to both traditional outlets as well as blogs - we got 3 or 4 reviews and two offers to write a guest blog (no blog reviews at all). One thing you can do is a giveaway on librarything or Goodreads - people who receive the book are asked to review as a courtesy. I'm just starting that process so don't know what percent actually do a review - but it may be worth the investment in book cost + mailings.

That's a great idea Judith!

Hi Zoe,  I find nowadays many potential readers look to book bloggers for reviews.  I posted my book and asked for reviews on the Facebook group "Book Junkies" and within one day, I had two offers for reviews.  Obviously, you need a proof copy or an ebook to send, but I would encourage you to look online for review possibilities.

Hi Karma,

To satisfy your curiosity and thank you for sharing idea, here is what I think.

  1. My publisher has sent review copies to many journal/newspapers, but a review may come out as long as a year later or never.
  2. Many journals only accept review copies several months in advance of the publication date. I guess my publisher is short staffed to do so.
  3. Seeking reviews is new to me, and I don’t have a network plus my limited time after day work. I knew finding a publisher was tough. Now I’ve learned that getting a book reviewed by a journal or paper isn’t much easier unless the publisher is larger or an author is well-known.:-)
  4. Some magazines provide pay-for-review services, but I’m not willing to pay for it.:-)

I guess many of my fellow writers may have the same experience. However, My favorite saying is that when the going gets tough, the tough gets going.:-)

Have a great weekend!

It's hard to get a book from a small publisher reviewed.

I'm curious, Zoe, if you find it difficult because the publisher is uncooperative or the journalist you're sending it to is uncooperative. I worked as the publicist for a small publisher for four years and our policy was to provide a review copy for any reviewer, no matter how small the publication that requested it. As a freelance book publicist now, I can say that the big publishers I've worked with are much stingier with review copies than the indie ones.

However, if you mean that less media are willing to consider it for review, you may be right about that.

It's hard to get a book from a small publisher reviewed. I’m happy to read a review of The Long March Home in this Women’s History Month though it’s from overseas.

TOMORROW! Back To The Books - www.backtothebooks.net - a bookstore dedicated to promoting indie authors - opens in Colorado. Those of you in Colorado Springs area, stop by to meet authors, enjoy catered food all weekend! Oh, and be sure to pick up copies of Allon Books 1-4 featured in YA section! Here's a link to a write-up in the local business journal.

Do you know who owns the rights to book reviews? Apparently, Amazon! http://bitly.com/hfiJoj
