Sounds like you write the kind of fiction I love to write -- hilarious and heartbreaking. Congratulations on your great reviews!

I come at publishing both from the inside (25 years working for small, independent publishers) and outside (my novels were published by the not-so-small nor independent Random House), so appreciate the complex interplay of issues in the book business. Last week at the AWP meeting revived my optimism about small publishers and passionate readers and writers who do it from the heart, often with little financial gain. I look forward to the conversation here. If you're interested, visit my website or check out my book Breaking Out of Bedlam.

LOL! Sounds like we're on the same page. The producer said my book is "The Big Chill" meets "It's Complicated" -- evidently that's how they pitch in Hollywood.

Judith, that is freakin' awesome!!! Do you think maybe they'd want to do a series and include my book, Bastard Husband: A Love Story? Seems like a logical pairing!

I'm thrilled to say that my independently published book HUSBANDS MAY COME AND GO BUT FRIENDS ARE FOREVER received the notice of a film producer who has now offered me an option for the screen rights! Yippee!

Right now, the only means for this is to market hard and get good reviews from reputable sources, win important contests. Sooner or somebody will establish an enterprise that screens and pronounces judgment, and self-published people will vie for that reputation. Most likely, though, it will be a commercial thing -- at least to start -- so its judgments will always be suspect.

Sorry, Pauline. I didn't see your post about the article in Publishers Weekly until after I did mine. You're right. Way to go Girls!

Interesting article in Publishers Weekly on self-published vs. traditionally published books in 2009.

Wow--amazing! Thanks for posting that, Pauline.

It's a bit of a concern, though, when one considers the lack of quality control in this deluge of titles. We've all read self-published books that are C-R-A-P. I wish there were a seal of approval self-published authors could apply for that would give our projects some distinction over those that never endured the scrutiny of an editor. You know what I mean?
