I'm an author of a children's book and am being invited to speak to a number of elementary school groups. Anything your students LOVE? Or HATE? I did teach 1/2 grade, but it's been so long I've forgotten...

Congratulations! What is your book? My elementary age students love visuals and being called up to demonstrate if and when possible. It also helps when they are familiar with the book ahead of time. Be prepared to answer many questions including many off topic ones..."What's your favorite color?, Do you have a pet? etc" Lol. Enjoy.
Thank you, Clara! The book is called Miracle Dogs of Portugal and is the almost true story of Henry the Navigator (who inspired Christopher Columbus) and the Portuguese Water Dog (now living in the White House). You can take a look at

I think visuals are a wonderful idea and something I hadn't thought of yet! Thank you.

Dear Tracy,
I have been teaching for a quarter of a century and there are some things children, of all ages, even my own boys, aged 27 and 26 respectively, dislike;and that is,being talked down to.They like being treated as adults and for the first couple of years in my career, when most of my students were in the age group between 11 and 14,there was a very clear distinction between the way they reacted to teachers who 'talked down' to them, and those who treated them as equals. Here,in India, teachers have always been looked up to as exalted beings and the teaching profession is considered a 'noble' one.We have stories in our myths and legends about obedience to teachers so total and absolute that a particular student who is an archer even cuts off his thumb and donates it to his teacher, when the latter demands it.Which means that a teacher is ALWAYS obeyed. The difference is,that some teachers are respected because they induce fear:and others, because they inspire love.
I hope I have helped.
Take care
Suma
Thank you Suma, those myths would be great fodder to children's books! (and sorely needed in the U.S., I imagine).
Tracy
Give them some stories about funny things that happened to you when you were their age. That usually breaks the ice and wins them over.
