Is a Love Life Distracting? 4 Replies

Aside from the usual distractions - raising kids, work writing, running a farm - I've found that if/when there's a guy "of interest" in my life, it affects my writing. I'm curious if others have the…

I lost myself utterly in a Western life of caretaking and nurturing all living things except me. One day I'll get serious and memoirish about it, and it wasn't all bad, but I am extremely thankful that I reached a dead end in which all that was left for me was to begin writing again. Eight months later, after extricating myself from the place and the person to a great extent, confining my nurturing time with my beloved animals to a few hours late in the day after I've written, eaten, rested, I am the proud author of about eighty blog posts, a 226 page memoir of a trip I took to Italy and the draft of a novel-- running currently at 30,000 words. One day perhaps I'll be able to balance a relationship with a writing life, but the inclination is leaving me as I too enjoy my freedom and privacy...xj

I get so much more done now that I am completely free to do so. The right man would be a perfect addition to my life; bar that, I have a far wider range without the interference.

I just joined the site and happy to find this group. I think all of us chose to be 'unpaired'. Family - men and children - distracts from creative activities. Or rather, family redirects our creative juices. I haven't started writing until my children grew up and I separated from my husband. If I didn't, I wouldn't be writing, I'm sure. Sometimes I think I started writing from boredom, but now I can't stop. Of course I'm alone. I don't have time for anyone else. Yuk!

Men are both distracting and expensive in my experience. Certainly, the pill was not the panacea for women's difficulties that Margaret Sanger anticipated. I'll look over Reichert's conclusions. But, as for economists comments on social issues, the authors of Freakonomics (Dubner & Leavit) contended that abortion among poor, at risk American women was the direct cause of the drop in drime in the 1990's. Beware of economists bearing conclusions.

To read the article by the economist, Reichert, about the untoward effects of the pill on women's status, please go to this link - and be sure and let me know what you think. I was a total skeptic until I got farther into it and then I was shocked by the truth of his argument. http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Bitter+pill:+in+a+provocative+analysis,+economist+Timothy+Reichert...-a0224167006

Hi Kathleen,
As someone who started taking the pill as soon as it hit the shelves, i would love to read the article. Can you provide a link? I cant find it. Thanks and a very Happy Mother's Day to All.

A friend of mine gave me an article to ready last week, Bitter Pill, about how the birth control pill actually undermined the status and power of women. I was so fully and completely ready to disagree with the article before I sat down to read it - convinced that pill had set me and millions of women free from an ancient history of reproductive and socioeconomic oppression - but though the argument the author puts forth is sometimes loose and, in some cases, lacks documentation, I have to say that by the end of the article I had seen a new light. Take a look at it. I think it is truly a game-changer. Bitter Pill by Timothy Reichert can be found in the May 2010 issue of First Times. Would love to hear what others have to say. Happy Mother's Day to all mothers, too.

Since I write more of the romantic type of novels, looks are important for my characters. I come up with their look various ways. I envision what they should look like, and write their attributes down, or I use pictures of people I clip from magazin…

My cousin, Em, doesn't see it. She sees a plain face, limp hair, fat rolls, etc. But to me she's beautiful, and maybe I'm biased, but she's the most beautiful woman I've ever known or seen. It's because she's the sister I never had, my sister in Chr…
