Dear Agent,

Fifty years ago, on May 5, 1961, Alan Shepherd became the first American in space.  I was 11 years old, and I remember watching the exciting event at school.  Everyone who could find a television watched.  Today we know so much more about our solar system and space travel, yet the excitement isn’t always there.  I have written a book for children called the Magical Journey; a story that is entwined with our Solar System.

I envision pictures of the planets, moons and asteroids.  I see children loving the book, teachers using it in the classroom, students reading it in the library, and I hear children listening to an MP3.  One of the most potent experiences of my childhood was a favorite book, with a recording of the story.  In fact, I loved that more than reading the story myself. This is for the children who, like me at seven or eight years old, love to read and love to learn.

My first published work was a poem in the school newspaper when I was seven years old.  I have had a number of articles published for adult readers.  Magical Journey is my first written work for children.  I appreciate your comments and look forward to hearing from you.

Jackie,

This sounds like an interesting project but I don't get any sense of what the book is about. Is it fiction? Is it a description of the solar system? Your query doesn't make it clear. WHY will kids love the book? Tell the agent!

Also, "11 years old" should be eleven years-old. Finally, you've duped watching/watched in your first paragraph. You might want to find another word.

Good luck!

(and you'd have to go on from there--is this non-fiction about the solar system or is it fiction that goes into it? does it start with 1961 and a little girl watching the first American in space?)

Hey, Jackie, have you ever considered joining SCBWII? It's the Society for Children's book writer's and illustrators and a terrific and very inexpensive reource.

Quotes, Memoirs, and Books on Writing I've Read to Avoid...Doing It

Working on my memoir, I've turned to many, many (many many, too many) books with tips on how to get started, organized, and inspired.  I also read a lot of what other authors say about the process and will share quotes here, as well.  I'll begin…See More
