Women Who MisBehave

I would love to hear your stories. If you would like to share a victory, a struggle, or simply a quiet moment of realization that came to you as you traveled the path toward your dreams, please get in touch with me at my blog or email address on this website. I hope you’ll add your own threads to the growing tapestry being created by women of courage and vision, women who have decided to pursue their own dreams and demand that their voices be heard… women who dare to misbehave.

Dawn - a note here to our fellow members......there is this person called MARQUITA sending out messages regarding shopping reviews....she is spamming....already i see that less saavy members are responding with their data.....this is another one of those writing scams that I see so much of out there in these desperate days....I have sent a message to one of the admins....if any of you have received a message from this Marquita my advice would be to block it....I come to this site for professional cameraderie, sharing info, mentoring etc....these scams and their obvious female target market remind me of the old-fashioned notion of women's earnings as PIN MONEY....that our incomes were just for shopping, as an adjunct to what our husbands made and supported us with.

BTW DAwn....good points that I will address later....gracias....

Female MisBehavior Or a Matter of Voice?

In her review of Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s wonderful book Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History, Kathryn Harrison of the New York Times wrote, “Much of what is characterized as female ‘misbehavior’ is a matter of voice—of a woman insisting she be heard: paid not only attention, but also the respect due a being as fully human and necessary as a man.”

When I read these words, something resonated deep within me. And as I began a deeper examination into the stories of women who “misbehaved”—at least, according to the expectations of the surrounding society—I began to understand that what had happened to me was merely the tip of the iceberg of the type of mistreatment, misunderstanding, and outright hostility that women of all ethnicities have been exposed to since—well, since the beginning of time.

Even after the advances of the last few decades, women are still subjected to a type of scrutiny and cultural vetting that most men do not dream of and cannot understand. Reading the stories of women who have made a difference, who have overcome obstacles and shaken off societal shackles to pursue their dreams, has convinced me that despite the successes of the past, so much more remains to be done. And the doing—the striving, persisting, and succeeding—has to start with me. And with you.
