I've had problems adding widgets outside of what's the norm. I've got messages that the widget I was trying to get was not supported by WP.com. It would, however, be supported if it was wp.org. The latter is, I understand, a lot more flexible but I'm afraid of making the switch right now and I don't know how to go about it really. If you got the Amazon widget, that may be akin to monetizing your blog and it seems that can only be done thru wp.org. That being said, WP wants their cut, meaning you have to pay for a host and that's the part I don't understand how to go about.

This is how I understand it but someone else may have some information I don't have.

Are you on wordpress.com (a free blog) or do you have a self-hosted WordPress blog? I can tell you how to do it if you've got your own blog. It's actually very simple.

Oops, I just added it to my self-hosted WP blog, and it didn't work the way it should. I've had trouble with things using the embed code before.

It's http://homecomingbook.wordpress.com/ I managed to use an embed code to get a utube video up, but that was on a page, not in the sidebar.

Unfortunately you won't be able to put on the she writes badge. If you have a wordpress blog (wordpress in the URL) they do not allow javascript. If you had a reg. blog powered by WP then you can easily add it.

I recently tried to add a copyright widget but couldn't even find an upload button, perhaps it was an older template, not sure. Anyway, I think we have to adapt the widgets we're given.

 

Try the image widget--upload the Shewrites badge as an image and make it a link. (That's an off the top of my head idea; not sure it will work.)

I think the distinction, that Cat von Hassel-Davies made a few posts earlier, is that you may not have the flexibility to add widgets if you have a wordpress hosted website.

 

For example, www.mywebsite.wordpress.com versus it you host your own site - without the wordpress attachment. For example, www.mywebsite.com

 

But to add widgets, you log into your website - through your administration account and somewhere in the sidebar you'll see an option for "Plugins." This feature will let you search a variety of plugins or widgets that you can place on your website. You can search through a keyword. For example, "Facebook," "Google +" etc.

Agreed, unless you pay for wordpress.org to host you can't post the lovely badge, unfortunately.  However, what I did was use the image widget.  I used photobucket to host the SW icon and then linked it to the "join" page.  It's not as glamorous but it gets the job done.  I'm assuming because it's linked to She Write's membership page this is not TOS violation.

I'm still struggling with the widget thing. I've not been at Wordpress all that long, so I'm still playing about deciding if I will stay - go to the premium version, return to blogger or just give it up and go to a self-hosted page and have my own way with it.  And  - I haven't settled on a theme either - since I'm testing some of those out as well. 

I got the badge added - although it's only a line link.  The formatting ( and widget) I put the code into was in the widget that was titled "text" and I chose to automatically make it form paragraphs, with a new paragraph for each button.  It's mostly working for me - although I want to use a different button and can't seem to locate them now. *sigh*

Yep. Unfortunately, when I did some Google research, I read on several sights that posting the badge on Wordpress just isn't possible. Boo. I even have my own site hosted by WP but, alas, it still won't post the badge, just a tiny link to the left of my sidebar.
