You've just missed the SCBWI annual conference, but it will be back again next year. Check their websight there are several writing retreats that take place throughout the year.

Great topic to add to our list! I live on the east coast and think that the New England SCBWI conference in New Hampshire is great. All the NE SCBWI conferences have been really good resources for craft and also agent/publishing information/contacts. I know there's a big LA SCBWI conference but not sure about other areas of CA. Check their website scbwi.org. There's also the NYC SCBWI conference but I found that almost too big. Are you looking for craft/retreats or more about publishing?

Hi! Thanks for responding. I really appreciate the feedback. I'm hoping to find something that's really focused on YA or would at least have some valuable workshops on the topic. I'd love to learn more about the craft, have the chance to hear writers talk and perhaps have my work reviewed.

CA has several active regions with workshops and seminars throughout the year. Hannah is right, if you check on their website you will be able to find a region near you and a list of events they have coming up.

I live in Western Washington and we have a very strong chapter, so our conferences really rock. I know this because I attended the SCBWI LA conference, the national summer gathering,in august. Several of the keynote speakers had been to WWA and the structure was familiar to me - keynotes, breakout sessions, socializing. Do you belong to SCBWI? It's tremendously helpful.

How lucky for you to have such great resources at your disposal! I don't know what sort of writing you're doing or interested in doing. What I find helpful is to identify the people I want to hear and then go where they are. However, I have to say in favor of the Big Sur conference--I know some of the faculty and writers who've attended, and I have heard nothing but good things about it. So if you can, go to more than one event! And be sure to come to LA in August for nationals.

I just signed up for the Backspace Writers conference in NYC. A ton of the top YA Agents will be there. The first day is a query/first pages workshop, with the agents! check out the site below.

jHi. I taught at the Andrea Brown Big Sur Conference earlier this month and loved it. Where in California do you live? My friend and fellow writer Nina LaCour and I just started teaching classes about to write and publish YA novels. www.writeteen.com Nina published HOLD STILL with Penguin and I've published YA novels with Simon & Schuster, Disney-Hyperion, and Random House.
